my mom n dad have a 2004 4runner that the hatch lock went bad. when you would gently close the hatch to let the motor pull in the hatch and lock it, i would ONLY pull the hatch down and then release it. Toyota dealer charged them $355 to take it out test it and tell them "yep, it's bad" then REINSTALL it cuz they said we'll have our son put in a different 1. they called me AFTER to ask if i could find 1 on Evil-bay or at a salvage yard. BOTH sources were a no go. they opted to buy the new part and have me install it for them. instead of paying $265 for the part and them spending $150 in labor (1 plug and 5 bolts???). when i took the new lock out of the box... there was a black string on the manual unlocking lever (figured it was in case the new lock did NOT work). 20 min later the old lock was out and the new 1 was in. but it didn't lock or unlock with the rest of the doors. using the key fob to lock and unlock the doors still didn't do it. unplugging the lock from the ECM squirting electrical cleaner in the lock side ONLY then using a little electrical connection "lube" didn't help it either. thank GOD for the lil black string...
so, here is my question. is there a "reset procedure" i must perform to the hatch ECM or to the main ECM to get the new lock to work? or is it possible that the part itself is defective? the lock WILL lock when the hatch is closed with a lil grunt behind it. but NOW their 4runner has a small black tail and they have to use the "tail" to unlock the hatch
I'm no idiot when it comes to cars & electronics. so ANY answer can get as technical as you would like. i can keep up. just make the answer in english
BTW, it's a new genuine Toyota part
