New to the site and im going to be purchasing a new vehicle here shortly. I have two in the running a 3rd gen 4runner or a jeep cherokee xj. Both can be had in my budget here where i live in the 150k+ mile range. My first question is what kind of mileage can i expect out of a 4runner i know the xj is pretty well a 200k+ mile engine with the 4.0 and aw4 combo. The toyotas are new to me altogether ive had a few jeeps but hate the tin can sound and popping and rattling they make.
Second are there some years that are better than others?
Third how do the ifs 35s and offroading hold up good combo bad anyone got some action shots the rubicon trail and moab will be in this trucks future is it possible?
Lastly anyone from az on this forum?
Thanks in advance hoping to hear from yall soon

Start looking at people's build threads for great action shots. Of course some are better then others. There's a thread just for showing and talking about 35" tires. Quite a few people from the Utah and Colorado area.... I'm sure you'll find some from Arizona as well. I have two jeep wrangers in my driveway (my daughters) and I would still have my 3rd gen 4Runner over her 2009 JK.

You take care of these engines and they will last forever. Several on here have over 300K on them. Most are close to or over 200K now and people are still putting Superchargers on them with no issues.

In stock form the 99 was an inch taller, but since you're talking about 35s, you'll be lifting it so that doesn't matter to you.

Some have a factory rear locker in them and have 4.30 gears. That's what I have and running 255/85x16 tires. With 35s you'll want 4.88 or 5.29. I have an automatic and my driving environment I'll get 5.29 with a front ARB locker when the time comes to run 35s. I'll keep my factory locker in the rear.

The newer 3rd gens won't have the rear locker option. They have a central locking differential. Don't know much about it but easy to learn about.

Yeah would definitely like to have the rear locker seems like a cheaper alternative than an arb hopefully i can find one with the locker

Then look for a 99 and maybe a 2000. Pre 99 the interior isn't as refined nor is the headlights.

I'm not exactly sure when the drivetrain changed from the rear locker to the central. 2000 or 2001. Again.... search people's build threads and take down notes. There's some fantastic rigs on here.

In 99, the interior got some updates, but nothing that can't be swapped pretty easily. No major changes. Some electrical/system changes in '99 too, but nothing too major. A 99/00 SR5 sport with an e-locker and 5 speed would be a lot of guys' here's dream rig- and they were built.
In '99, Toyota made a "Highlander edition". These had color matched front and rear bumpers, small black textured flares, color matched grill, and a scooped hood. These were the tallest sitting 3rd gens. Not all '99 sit taller.
I don't hear much about '96, but '97/'98 Limited had e-lockers factory. 99/00 Limited had a multi-mode xfer case, which is basically a case that makes AWD AND 4WD possible. Pretty cool. All '01/02 had the same case, but the 2/AWD shifter went to electric actuation via button on the shift knob, and then a push button on the dash locked the case into 4WD. People/maybe Toyota calls this a "center locking diff". I think that's stupid, and people confuse this with a locker. It's not a locker at all.
Here's a couple good links-

Sounds like im looking for a 97/98 limited then not a fan of awd at all and a push button 4wd sounds like its missing a 4low to me idk am i right in assuming that?

No. Push button gets takes you from 2H to 4H/Open. You still have 4H/locked, either via the lever or a center diff switch and 4Lo.

Ok cool I was thinking for a second that there wasnt a 4low, and I was like no thank you!

I don't hear much about '96, but '97/'98 Limited had e-lockers factory.

I've had a 99, an 01, and currently have a 96 (all Limiteds). From what I understand, e-lockers were an option on the Limited, not standard. I've seen several Limiteds for sale without the e-locker, but I do feel like they are more likely to have them than an SR5.

I also think that besides the lack of a body mount, the 96 is the exact same as a 97. The 98s had some small differences inside, but I haven't found any major differences.

All Limited's are automatic transmission, not sure if you want that or manual. You will have to go with SR5 or base for manual transmissions. MT's are outnumbered by automatics by about 20 to 1 I'd say. If you do find a manual it will most likely be 4.1 gearing. Unlikely to have a rear locking axle but they do exist. Automatics are usually 4.3 gearing. What others do and I plan to do is swap out the non-locking rear axle of a manual 4.1 with a 4.3 locking axle from an automatic (usually Limited) from the junkyard. Then also swap out the front diff to 4.3 so you have the same ratios front and back.

I have both. I've got a '98 Cherokee and a '00 T4R. The Cherokee is probably more capable in rugged terrain because you've got a solid front axle and disconnecting the sway bar gives you lots of articulation. It's also 700-800 pounds lighter than a T4R. The Cherokee engine will last forever and so will the tranny if it's an auto. No pink milkshakes either. Engine cooling is marginal but you can run the electric fan continuously to compensate. You can put the transfer case in neutral and flat tow it forever. The Cherokee will probably cost half of what you'll pay for a T4R.

Creature comfort wise, the T4R is the hands down winner. Everyone else here will go on and on about why they think you want a T4R. It really depends on what you want. You can't beat the dollar/capability ratio that the Cherokee offers. Maybe that's why I've had three of them. That being said, I'm sticking with the T4R for the creature comforts.

Ive seen ones with 450k on them. And run like a top. Mine personally have 370k and 420k both are fine, expect to replace power steering, alternator among other accessories and steering/suspension component eventually though
