New member -few questions 2013 4runner

Hey folks,

Great forums you guys have here. We have owned toyotas for a long time and have nothing negative to say about our vehicles. I own a 2008 toyota tundra that has been perfect since I bought it new with 3 miles. I live and work in Texas. I am currently helping out my mother buying a new vehicle and she lives in FL, she currently drives a 2007 rav4. After months of looking at different cars and suvs she wants a 2013 4runner.

I am planning to pull the trigger in FL during the holidays. I have a few questions that I hope I can get answered.

I am looking for a 2013 SR5 in black, graphite sports cloth seats, sunroof, 2wd, backup camera.

1) Can you get the back up camera without the navigation?

2) How would you rate the stock navigation system? , I am trying to determine if this would be a waste of money. Is the Toyota nav reliable and easy to use? (she is not too skilled with tech stuff if you know what I mean)

Another issue that I see is that the Nav package is usually grouped with the additional row seats option which I don't really want. In the "toyota southeast" region at least.

Backup camera is a must have but I am still on the edge about the Navigation option.

3) Regarding price, what kind of discount can I get on a new 4runner? . I know this is a pretty general and variable question but a rough answer would help. I am used to negotiating trucks where 8k-10k is a doable discount after some good negotiation and shopping. I am about to start hitting different websites to determine a target price.

We are going to show up at the dealer with pre approved financing at 2-2.50 %, and a good down payment. No trade in.

I'm not sure about SR5, but my Trail has a backup camera that displays in the rear view mirror.

The backup camera should be available in the mirror as an option without the Nav. However, it amounts to about a 2" screen on the left side of the mirror when you shift into reverse. I would much prefer the Nav with the in dash screen. Nav was not an option for the SR5 for the 2010 model year, so I'm stuck with the 2" screen. I have not used the Toyota Nav, but IIRC from previous postings, the most annoying feature seems to be that you can not make adjustments to the Nav while the vehicle is moving (or running?).

I have the backup camera on the mirror in my 2011 Avalon and love it. You do not have to look down at the dash to see it. It is right there where you would be looking in the rear view mirror anyways.

I had the Toyota factory navigation on my Tundra, and I did not think highly of it. I can't tell you the actual price when its part of an option package, but I can tell you it costs a LOT! A Garmin/TomTom or a Sygic smartphone/tablet app costs WAY less and does the same thing. Speaking from personal experience, I would not buy the factory navigation option again unless I got a huge discount on a vehicle that just happened to have it.

Honestly I have heard a few negative comments from friends that have toyota OEM Nav systems. I agree that portable GPS units might be more economical and maybe even more reliable.

I does seem like I am going to have to get the Nav package to get the backup camera and most of these models also include the third row option which will never be used. That's how most 4runners seem to be configured in the Southeast region. They also add a lot of junk to the options to bump the cost up. Toyoguard, dam $400 floormats (when I can get weathertechs for way less), running boards, etc. I typically add these accessories aftermarket.

I am already contacting multiple dealerships to see what I find.

Well folks just to provide some closure to this thread, I ended up pulling the trigger a few days back.

Unfortunately, I was forced to get the 3rd row option. They could only find 2 trucks in FL with the exact configuration we wanted. I found a very helpful salesman that stayed in touch with me all the way from Texas.

We went with a black 2013 4Runner SR5, black interior, convenience package (sunroof, sport trimmed seats, etc), Navigation, 2WD .

No leather.

The truck I negotiated had a a MSRP of $37,450. We paid $36,100 out of the door, with tag registration, all taxes, just everything. We put down a good downpayment and financed at 2.04% with Bank of America for 60 months. Made the deal about an hour north of Miami.

This was a vehicle they had to purchase from another lot and bring it to me all the way from the port!. I feel pretty good about the deal, lowest price I found in this region.
It is expected to arrive on Monday or Tuesday.
