New Muffler Install

Okay so obviously I won't be doing this myself, since i have no idea on how to use a welder, but i'm getting a Dynomax muffler installed on my car in a couple days and I wanted to see what people's experiences were with this muffler...I'm looking for a gurgle or something deeper at idle to best describe what I'm trying to accomplish, if there is anyone out there who has used this kid or another type of muffler? Midas said it would install it, costing anywhere from 70-100 (100 if they needed extra pipe) but i remembered some one on here getting it installed on theirs for 65, so hopefully i won't need any extra pipe. Should i get new exhaust pipe from the back of the muffler to the exit or just have them leave the stock pipe in and switch out the muffler? Input is appreciated. Thanks

maybe im confusing myself but i think ive read of people getting their mufflers welded on for closer to 40$. as far as if you should leave the stock piping, it will depend on how big your muffler is compared to your stock one, i would leave it, but thats just me. good luck
 
Most of the time, when you go to a muffler shop they will let you know your options. I went to get a muffler and ended up leaving with a catback flowmaster 40 series exhaust system. They replaced all the piping from the cat back, they went a size up to 2.75 inch piping, a new chrome tip and the 40 series flowmaster muffler.

out the door it was $135. Honestly i would ask around, im sure you have a muffler shop around you, they will have better garantees and service and know more about what they're doing.

As far as sound, it is discribed as a jeep. After hearing that i was a little weary but in the end i was very pleased with the look and sound inside and out.

When i get off today ill post up some pictures of it and try a sound clip. So far my new favorite places are parking garages :p
 
hey broncosi... are you forced induction? why did you go up to a 2.75"? factory we are 2.25" and going any larger than that unless you are FI is going to result in lost backpressure and performance, have you noticed a loss?
 
so your saying they installed a whole system for you for $135? was that parts and labor? also where was this at?
 
Took my vortex muffler to Midas... they installed all new 2.5" piping, the muffler, and a 4" tip for around $200

Its pretty loud, but noone else drives my car so i personally have no clue how loud it is outside.

And..... if u get a pipe coming straight out the back, dont expect to use your back window much.... the draft pulls all the fumes right in the window. Ive gotten very lightheaded before

Otherwise i dont notice any change in hp or acceleration etc... just loud
 
okay thanks for the input i appreciate it. that doesnt sound too bad actually for all new piping too. what if i have the back spoiler up top will that keep the fumes from entering the rear window?
 
prob. not, toyota has a warning in the manual to not have the back window open while driving unless all other windows are also open
 
oh okay. well yeah i always have some other windows down when i put the back window down because i sometimes get the buffeting which is annoying, so i roll the back windows down half way or so. if i have the option, should i just have them direct it straight out the back?
 
only if you like that look and dont offroad heavily, if you offroad alot you chance smashing them against the ground
 
yeah i do like the look as long as it doesnt stick way far out past the bumper, i'd like to keep it from sticking out past it though. and i dont offroad much so it wont be a problem in that respect.
 
well i got it put in for 70, i went with the super turbo from dynomax, it sounds really mean but has kind of a drone at 1500 to 2000 rpm, other than that its awesome. smoks a little but i figure thats just it blowing the crap out from the new muffler. my parents...are going to hate it.:D
 
I got quoted $35 for welded install without needing extra piping. $45 if they need to add a little.

I should receive my vortex from Burtman tomorrow. I'm a little worried that it might be too loud. We'll soon find out. After install will it quiet down after putting miles on it? If it is too loud is there anything I can do to quiet it down?

The vortex is quite loud...of course noise will be different based on piping size and tip size... my tip is 4 inches so it is designed for like an F-150. At certain RPM it is louder and more drony, but at others like when accelerating really fast the sound is kinda just like the engine sound amplified.

After driving for like an hour it is much louder than it is when its cold, and as for breaking it in, it does take a little while. Mine smelled a little first off, but sound-wise, I didnt notice much of a change.

And as for the rear spoiler... if u have a pipe coming out back with the back window down ur gonna smell something...now whether or not your front windows are down will change the flow of wind through the car and will get the exhaust moving backwards out....
 
they left all the stock piping there except for where they had to mkae the welds and whatnot, so it still exits in the same place. now all im having trouble finding is a tip to cover up the stock exhaust exit because it has the sound without the look. any ideas? why does the 4runner tip have to be wider for the last ten inches or so?

Im not sure what FI is. I have noticed better gas milage and alot better response, i dont have to touch the gas pedal as much and in 55 MPH zones its hard to not cruise at 70. They said they normally up the piping a half inch. I have a cold air intake if that has anything to do with it.
 
(didn't want to make a new thread)........

im looking into buying an aftermarket exhaust system for my 93' but don't really have any direction as far as what I should be looking for. Im looking for the gain in power and gas mileage that people have been mentioning. (i know its not much). It doesn't have to be real loud but enough for people to notice and for the truck to at least sound faster!!
can someone give me a direction and maybe some prices????

Just had the Vortex installed yesterday. I love it. Loud but not too loud. The muffler shop had me worried since the muffler was produced by Cherry Bomb. They said many people don't like the cherry bomb mufflers' sound. He then said that he hadn't heard the Vortex. He kept tryin to get me to buy their magna flow mufflers. However, after the install everyone was plenty surprised by the sound of the Vortex. The guy told me it sounds pretty much like the magna flow he was trying to push/sell me. I was out the door for $45. They also said that to keep the muffler from rusting I should add a high heat paint to the weld spots/muffler. He said that rusting is the biggest problem w/mufflers.
