New Nitto Grapplers!!!

I get 16.5-17.5 city with my bigger Nittos and I'm a leadfoot and this MPG is with my Yakima up top and with my mom getting 18 from her bone stock '99 Limited I don't really see the loss.

If you never see off road (meaning kmore than a dirt road or flat trail) then Nittos or any A/T tire is a poor choice but if you do off road more than a few times Nittos are one of the best and affordable AT tires out there and with very good road manners especially in the wet they are in my experiences better than any BFG A/T I've driven on.

I won't even bother trying another tire at this point.

Anyone know how the 265/70/17 Nittos compare in size to the same size BFG AT? That picture of the front tire clearance leads me to believe the Nittos are certainly no smaller.

As per Thai's post in one of my threads:

It is apparently significant with 4runner owners because i hear people rub at extreme steering angle with BFG but not with other AT tires of the same size. According to manufacturer's stats, here are the facts:

BFG AT KO 265/70/17 Load Range C = 16/32" tread depth, 10.7 width, 31.8 diameter, 654 rpm (rev per mile)

BFG AT KO 265/70/17 Load Range E = 16/32", rest of stats same as above

Nittos TG 265/70/17 Load Range E = 15.6/32", 10.94 width, 31.61 diameter, 657 rpm

So, based on above stats, it seems like Nittos is a tiny big wider (surprise for me), but slightly shorter in diamter. The "rev per mile" confirms that when rolling the Nittos is a shorter (less diameter) tire. BTW, the "rev per mile" is what you look at when comparing a tire's "tallness."

Hope this helps.

BFG AT has a very squared off shoulder with pretty heavy lugs for an AT tire. That probably contributes to the rubbing.

But, IF he got another tire of similar quality and it got better MPGs, then it would be worth it.

Summit...what did you end up getting??

I agree , especially with gas prices the way they are , every little bits helps.

Yeah , Summit what did you get ???????????????

Though the Revos have pro's and con's with me I've sure got good gas milage with them.

Josh , what are the stats on the P rated like you have or the C rated . I could not get on DT to compare.

I am sorry, but if you are worried about a 1MPG loss, maybe you are driving the wrong vehicle my friend.

DAMN, I was not slamming the tire, I SAID I was a DD!!!!!!

Before Nitto's I got between 320-340 tank, mix of hwy/city driving after, 275, at least 2-3mpg less! As I said before it was not worth it to me being that My T4R was a DD . That being said, I thought the Nitto's were a very aggressive, sharp tire, just didn't fit my profile at the time. I went with a pair of goodyears w/ OWL.

I understand that it is a DD. Mine is a DD as well, not to mention I am still in college. Just saying there was only a 1 MPG decrease between my Dunlops and the Nitto's WITH THE LIFT, so I find it hard to believe there was a 2-3 MPG loss from just the Nitto's alone.

Not to mention the 1MPG loss was also when going from a 265/65/17 to a 265/70/17. Did you stay with the 265/70/17 size or go back down to the 265/65's?

Totally agree with Josh, I put a 2/1 and Nittos on and my milage BARELY suffered.

I seriously have no idea how you had a 2-3 MPG loss with the Nitto's alone. Maybe you just got so excited over them you drove harder :D

i think he meant his is a DD and he doesnt see much dirt so there is no need for the nittos...especially with a 1mpg loss, let alone 2-3mpg. dang, id be happy with a 1mpg increase! im running the nittos 265 70 17, bone stock and i struggle to get 300 miles/tank and im nice on the throttle.

i decided to try 91octane for my san fran trip. if i get 1mpg more, it pays for itself. i avg 18mpg from LA to SF. i was avg 20mpg earlier in the trip before i hit the mountains/hills. i stayed between 2000 and 2200 rpms with a feather foot.

320-275= 45 miles. Avg. fillup puts in 18 gallons, so 45/18= 2.5MPG. I admit I only did one tank on the nittos, so it was not exact science. In the 3 years I owned my t4r I only had it off road a few times. Over the course of a year the extra 2.5 MPG equates to more than $400 less on gas if your doing 15,000 miles per year.

I calculate MPG by resetting trip at fill-up and then dividing what I put in at the next fill-up into my mileage on trip.

Summit , the tires look good.

I can understand you point since mine is a daily driver and choosing that line of form and function is always a trick. mine is a DD , but I put on 20k miles per year and do like to play off road so choosing a good combo AT tire is important to me.

I didn't buy this 4R for gas milage , but in this day and age , you gotta squeeze out of it what you can. Even some of the new compound all season tires do really well in snow and pretty well an dirt and gravel roads to.

Looks good. I have been running the Grapplers for two years now. Almost 40k and still have plenty of tread. Good choice.

Thanks. I'm looking seriously at the Nittos and the prospect of them being a tad less tight in the stock wheel well, compared to the KOs, has me looking even harder.

I would love to try Nitto TG's , but there is nobody here carries them and I don't want to do mail order thing. That can be a pain in the a$$ if things don't work right . Been there done that.

Get the Nittos, I want you to test drive them for me:biggrin2: I just looked at http://www.nittotire.com/#index.dealers. They had 3 dealers within 25miles of 53051.

yes they do , problem is they all know it !! They cost as much as a BFG AT and 1 that was $5 higher. I've already priced them.

I know of these dealers and they are not receptive to dealing or internet matching.

I understand. Good tires seldom have material workmanship issues. The types of issues you're likely to have seem to be road hazard related or install related. I agree with you, having local boys on your side is worth alot!

I have done the Tirerack thing. I have a great local shop but there's something said for being able to go to any Goodyear, Firestone, Costco etc while on the road or on a Sunday afternoon. On my daily driver I will always take the easy way out. I have more important things to deal with than waiting for UPS to bring a tire.

I got all 4 of my nittos, had them mounted and balanced for $500...

Just keep looking around and hopefully you will have the same luck i had

I could see this happening. Especially if you did not factor in the size difference. Nitto TG AT come in P and LT ratings. I'm sure the LT (if that's what was installed) is a few lbs heavier which would impact fuel economy. LT rated tires also require higher inflation pressures than similar sized P rated tires. Running an LT tire at the factory recommended psi for vehicles orig. equipped with P-rated tires will lead to poor fuel economy and potential overheating of the tire.

The GY SR-A's look like a good fit for your truck and usage. It will give you good mileage and ride and a little traction should you venture off the pavement every once in a while.

It looks like Blair is running P-rated, based on the total installed price. LT's are more $, about 50 bucks per tire. Anyone running these in LT (E-rated)?
