I haven't worked on cars in a while but am not afraid of getting my hands dirty and just bought a 2nd car that the wife and i wanted for when the weather gets worst here in alaska. I just got the 2000 4runner 4wd and am excited to have a new project. People please point me in the right direction. I drove it a bit and its felt solid. No real problems but can turn if not fixed. I am planning on doing some work to it. Was thinking about an ome 3in lift and a shrockworks front bumper and just have a good time with it out here. Anyways. I jumped under the truck to take a look and saw a bunch of oil. Cant really pin point the location yet planning on cleaning the engine this weekend but with a quick look found some fresh oil around the exhaust manifold from looking underneath also along with a possible real main seal and an oil pan seal or just the plug. If anyone could help me out with direction on fixing the issues that would be awesome. Yes. I am sure i can figure out the oil drain plug lol. But i was thinking of tackling the rear main seal if you all have any pointers please help make my life a little easier.

Check your valve covers. Very common to leak

oil leaks are a fickle beast.. your best bet is to clean it and check frequently afterwards. 3rd gens commonly leak from the valve cover which you can often re torque (to spec) and solve the problem.. at least temporarily.
If you are finding oil around the manifold then you'd have to be leaking from somewhere relatively high on the engine, sounds like it could be the VC. But again, i'd recommend cleaning before investing too much time into your search

a rear main seal! Those are nasty expensive/pita to repair. vc much less so and yes try tightening them first, 10mm. Mine smoked and continued for a few months (even with some cleaning) after tightening the vc bolts. Some of my bolts were so loose I could turn them a couple times by hand! After about 18 months a few were loose again, not as loose as originally but needed 4-5 rachet moves to tighten up again But they were not leaking and no smoking. :banana:
