New owner of a 2010 4Runner!

I just purchased a 2010 4Runner 4x4 a couple weeks ago, the 1st one in at the local dealership. I previously had a 1999 Dodge Durango SLT Plus fully loaded that I bought new. I had that SUV for 11 years and figured it was finally time to retire that one. I have been looking for a replacement for a year or so but did not like anything on the market, until the new generation of the 4Runner. I only have about 200 miles on it, but I think it is a great SUV!

I bought the SR5 but loaded it with everything (leather, bluetooth, sunroof, AC outlets, Ipod hook-up, XM Sat. Radio, etc). That being said maybe I can help answer some questions/concerns some people have about the new ones.

My Durango had the 5.9L V8 (all I have owned was V8's), I was very 'on the fence' about only the v6 but this v6 seems to have plenty of 'umph' so far. It has more hp than my 5.9L had, but of course less torque, all in all it would give my old one a run if not beat it. If you are going to tow that is where it matters, the D could tow 7300lbs, this can only do 5000lbs, but most people are not hauling that much around, and if you are, you looking at a Tahoe or Yukon.

I do have a concern about the skid plate group, the plate covering the fuel tank goes about 35% the way back then ends!!! My plates on my D covered 100% of the tank. What if you are dragging on an object across the plate when it ends, right into the tank it goes. I called Toyota direct and spoke with a couple reps. The fuel tank plate is essentially the same on all 3 models, I was told Toyota has never offered a plate covering 100% of the tank. Oh, ignore the picture in the brochure showing a plate covering 100% of the tank, I was told that was a mistake. Great way to mislead That is about the only fault I see with the 4Runner.

I am VERY happy with this new SUV. I was looking at 06'-08' limiteds before this new one came out. You sit a LOT higher in this one than the previous generation, which I like. They brought the interior up-to-date finally so that is another big plus.

Congrats on the purchase. I still haven't seen a new Runner yet on the roads which is surprising being here in Colorado and every other gen of 4Runner is well represented here.

local dealer called me a few weeks ago to tell me they had a Limited—it was gone in 3 hours. then the other day i was driving down the street and spotted it in a driveway; turns out the woman who bought it lives about a mile from me. it's the only one in this area, for sure.

Thanks for the 'welcomes'! I am in eastern MA and the 3 local dealers only have one each. From what I have 'heard' Toyota is limiting the dealers to a certain amount per dealership. I had a family member in FL say their local dealership (very large) is limited to 4 a month. I bought mine the 1st day on the lot, I was told a LOT of people came in to look at it, but it was 'sold' . The dealership I bought mine from just got a Limited in this week. Pics to come soon (I can't believe I have not taken any yet!)

Yes, I thought so too, from the photo in the brochure, 2 reps at Toyota told me it does NOT. They put me on hold for a while because I mentioned the photo so they looked up the specs and diagrams. I was very surprised!

I wouldn't worry about the fuel skid. The front third of the fuel skid gets 99% of the contact. Mine is beat to heck on the front part and nearly untouched on the back two thirds.

Toyota gave you wrong info, though. The Trail has the full length fuel skid. There's a pic of it in a thread called "New Trail".

Thanks for the info! Of course all it takes is that 1% of the time to cause the damage. I took a look at that thread and the photos, and you are right about it covering 100%! I am NOT happy with Toyota right now. The reps I spoke to were 110% positive that none came with the full plates. In fact the 2nd upper rep was a little rude about it, that I would even suggest a such a thing. He then told me that he showed the photo in the brochure to 3 other people in the office and they all did not see what I was talking about (which everyone I showed the photo to agreed with me, go figure) I have a feeling I will be making a call back on Monday and getting some real answered. I have issues because no where does it say the plate group is different between models, just that it is standard across the line.

I just saw your post from Dec '09 about getting your new 4runner. I'm in the market for a new 2010. Are you still happy with the vehicle? There's a recent thread containing some complaints about early repairs needed. So I'm wondering about your experience since you're one of the earliest buyers of the 5th generation.

I love it so far! (minus the horn, but that was a very simple swap/fix). Yes, I might have been one of the earliest but I do not have nearly the miles as others do on theirs. I got mine the last day of Nov and I am just shy of 3k miles now, I think there are a few around 10k already! All in all I am very happy, mechanically no issues. The one annoyance I have is with the stock stereo, wish it had a better backlight in the sun, it washes right out. That and I wish the XM channel numbers were bigger. It you get onewith the Nav that will not be of concern to you. I would not hesitate, like with most forums, people find them when they have problems to post about.

Thanks for the input. There's some sort of negative CR review that's disheartening, so it's nice to hear that you're enjoying the vehicle. My other choice was the Pathfinder but I just like the look of the 4runner a little better, so my heart is set on it.

Razle, my SR5 has 5,400 miles on it and I still cannot wait to get behind the wheel every day. I thought this vehicle would have worn off on me by now, but I am just enjoying it so much. I've owned several new vehicles in my lifetime and this one is just so much better than all of them.

The complaints I have are in line with Westwind's. The only other issue would be the popping noise in the lumbar area of the driver's seat when the lumbar support is set close to full position. I adjusted mine perfectly now and the popping has stopped.

My advice would be to buy one and I guarantee you will not be dissapointed.

4 miles

Just picked up my 2010 4Runner last night. Had 4 miles on it when I drove it out of the dealership! I have a whopping 24 miles on it now. I'm a first time 4Runner owner and am loving it so far. Mag Grey,bluetooth, moonroof, leather heated seats, usb, etc.

Anyone in Harrisburg, PA area? Honk if you see me!
