New seats and steering wheel for 2nd gen

I just got a 94 4runner and quickly realized how uncomfortable the drivers seat is. Does anybody have any good recommendations on seats?

Also, I want a steering wheel with a bit more "girth". The stock wheel is to thin for my liking. Any recommendations on a steering wheel?

No preference on aftermarket or OEM.

I just picked up a set of leather seats out of a 95 and they are pretty comfortable!
As for the steering wheel, I installed a Nardi with a quick release hub.

I just put a steering wheel cover on and that gave me that bigger wheel feeling I enjoy. As for the seats, that is a good question. :snacker:

I'm planning to put Corbeau Baja XRS suspension seats in mine. My wife has very serious back problems and I want to make her as comfortable and safe as possible. Total cost with wedge sliding brackets is around $1100 for the seats in a 5 point harness configuration.

My 1st gen came with Baja RS's in it and they are great. Good support, they recline, and are super comfy. It even came with a little squeeze ball for adjustable lumbar. On the downside it makes it tougher for people to get in the back but that's obviously not a problem for a 2nd gen.

Before I give some advice - what are your dimensions?

Well something in the lumbar support area of the chair is stabbing me in the back, thats why I was wanting new seats. Thanks for the steering wheel tip, I'm about to order that now.

Reviving and old thread here-
I have a 93 with leather seats. Honestly they're trashed. The foam is ok but the leather is all cracked(Florida car). I have called upholstery shops and they're asking in the thousands just for the front two seats. For that price I could drop aftermarket. Does anyone know if 3rd gen or 4th gen seats will bolt in? I have all Manual seats so I don't care about losing heated seats etc..they're are plenty of 3rd gens at the local junkyard which I can still the front seats out of if possible. I'm not really looking to do any crazy fab work. All advice is appreciated. Thanks!

90'ish prelude and acura integra seats mount up front very easily

My driver's seat is ripped in the typical spots for a 20+ year old 4runner with close to 200K. It has also reclined one me a few times while driving like the ratchet mechanism was about to die. Not a good thing to happen I had looked around for a good replacement but no luck finding one that was cheaper than what I paid for this thing

Several years ago I installed a set of 96'ish Prelude seats in the Trekker. I had replaced those with a set of suspension seats. Attempted to sell the Prelude seats and even tried to give them away..No luck, they sat in the garage for a few years. They are still in great shape so I busted out the tape measure.
busted out the tape measure...front mounts were 16.75" on the 4Runner seat

hmmm...Prelude seat front mounts are 16.75"

i throw the seats in the 4Runner to test fit..the inside mount for the prelude mount of course hits the seat belt mount causing it to cock the seat at the wrong angle


At first i thought about picking up some camry or corolla latches that would mount to the seat rail similar to the prelude latch. I was gonna have to make a mount to the inside rear corner any way, so I cut that sucker off and mount the seat
pretty cool that the stock front mounts work perfect
outside rear mount will get extended tomorrow with some flat stock. Inside rear should be a simple 'L' bracket.

it will end up being bolt in install..
Not a perfect match but i think it will work

i don't have a pic but the outside mount I made an angled piece and just drilled it, inside rear mount was a similar deal, very easy to make no crazy fab work

I'm pretty sure I've seen innumerable builds where the owner has put 3rd gen seats in a 1st or 2nd gen 4Runner. You might end up putting a piece of angle on one bolt as DropZone did above. We are all built differently but 3rd gen seats are more comfortable for me than 4th gen and my '16 Tacoma. Mine are cloth and in excellent shape.

Google must have changed its google fu because I'm having a hard time finding any of the thousands of seat threads. Google seems to want to sell seat covers. Here is a long thread that shows some modifications people have made. There sure are some ugly seats out there.

Dropzone- thank you so much for the idea! As well as the pictures as to give me a general idea. I like the look of those seats and they're all kinds of old acuras being parted out on Facebook. So definitely will check those out.

Nervo19- I figured there were plenty of seat swaps out there. Especially with how similar these cars are. But like you said, google just wasn't finding the threads. I'm checking out the link you posted as well as looking for an indepth on the 3rd gen seat conversion. They're my favorite seats by far and the most readily available (in Tampa there's tons of junkyards carrying them).

On another tangent, any suggestions for a rear seat swap? My bottom cushions are pretty torn up as well. Maybe I'll just buy the whole interior out of a third gen and try to swap it in. Will definitely post pictures and maybe a thread once I reach my minimum

I'm pretty sure people have put 3rd gen back seats in 2nd gens. That would be a bonus if the whole thing matched.

I nearly forgot to mention that 1989-2004 Tacoma seats should fit fine too. I'm thinking of the ones with bucket seats. You probably still have a couple of bolts "off" and have to make brackets.

So I'm not sure if anyone has ever replaced the steering wheel on their 2nd gen but mine has the cruise control on the wheel and though I don't use it I'm not sure if I can swap steering wheels.

Haven't dont much, if any fab work. What size/ type of angle should i get? So you used the angle to allow you to use the original holes correct?

I used some 1/4" flat bar stock (I think it was 11/2" wide) I bought at a local hardware store, cut it using a cut off wheel on my 4.5" grinder, you could cut it with a hack saw too.
I bent it using a BFH and my vise to hold it. nothing fancy. I also drilled the holes prior to bending it. I also made a template out of some cardboard to find my hole spacing prior to bending.
The outside mount was a simple bend at an angle, the inside tunnel mount was a little more of a pain as was it ended up being 2 bends fairly close.
you could probably get by with using 3/16" stock, easy to beat into submission
