New Setup Questions

Ok, so I got my new setup installed this evening, and was really excited about it. Until I got home in my garage in the lights and saw that 3 of the 4 wheels are all scratched. Brand new wheels. ATX Mojaves. Got everything installed at discount tires. Going right back to them tomorrow. Will they replace them?

Have you tried rubbing it off? It is hard to tell from the pics, but it might just be the white tire bead lubricant they use when they mount the tire. I can see some of it on the tires.

Buy some Maguires Cleaner Wax and try going around the rim. It has a super light abrasive and won't hurt anything to try. It almost looks like plastic or, as was said, lubricant. It does not look like scratches from your pics.

Well, I just tried with a watered towel. Feels rough when I run my finger over it, which is why I'm assuming it was scratches. It's definitely not just the lubricant.

Do you have a light rubbing compound? Either that or the cleaner wax will take it off if it's on top of the paint. Usually the techs will put a plastic shield over their tire tool when mounting a tire to the rim to keep from scratching. Your pics to me look like it is plastic that has rubbed off on the rim.

I'm sure they would. My point was it might not be as bad as it seems. Take it back if you feel uncomfortable doing it. If it is just a plastic rub then they should polish off with no damage.

the more i look at those pics, the more i think its just the lube that has hardened or some kind a grease/crayon pencil type marking. it doesnt look like a normal metal scratch.

you look at pictures and the white part fades in/out as it goes around the rim and the faded/slight white areas dont really show any metal type scratching.

take some wd-40 to it and rub it out first and see if that works.

the white part doesnt seem to fit the metal that would be exposed under the painted surface if something actually rub down to the metal part of the rim.

I did try some WD-40 on it, and it rubs away, but then pops back up. So I don't know if its just not strong enough. Like you, I thought it was just dried up lubricant or something, but the fact that it doesn't just rub off and stay off and feels rough to me has me worried. It's on the majority of 3 of the 4 wheels.

Take it back! Part of what you pay discount for is their service! So let them serve you and make you happy That's actual the reason I use discount tire only. Every once in a while they screw something up just like everyone. But with them I have had nothing but o my gosh we are going to get that fixed for you right now! And that I has gotten them all of my repeat business.

hmmm, if the wd-40 wets it down to make it disappear, then its probably plastic that has melted onto the painted surface due to pressure.

the white doesnt fit the looks/characteristics of metal on metal damage. it looks more like something was rubbed across the top of the rim lip that was plastic.

only thing i can think of now is to use a plastic spatula and try rub off a thick spot of white or let some wd-40 sit and soak some to loosen it up.


edit: i know when we got the 2012 Taco, it had TRD fake beadlock rims, they still had the painted (plasti-dip) blue spots from the factory. some are still there, but some have rubbed off over the year. to lazy to go out and rub them out, so i let weather remove them slowly.

They are ordering me new wheels. Shocking it was that easy with no fuss. Not sure how quickly it will be done, but at least it will be taken care of.

Yea, I have had great experience with Discount Tire (Americas Tire around here). Glad they took care of you and everything will be made right.

It's nice to hear a good outcome, rather than the store trying to blame it on you or who-knows-what to get out of standing behind their FU.

Please be sure to post up the final outcome. If they're really stand up guys, they will offer you something for your trouble, free rotations or some-such.

all you guys with local Discount Tires are lucky... seems i'm always hearing good things about them. i have yet to find a tire company that's its equal on the east coast.

Yeah, to be honest, I was really shocked it was that easy. Although it still hasn't been finalized, so maybe I shouldn't feel too comfortable yet.

I was really happy with them during installation. They painted the hubs like I wanted (front hubs didn't have caps like I thought they would, as seen on Harper7). I had done the front liner shift the night prior pulling it as far as I could, and removed the mudflap at the rear of the front wells. However, I was getting really bad rubbing on the bumper itself right where the liner was. So they trimmed that down. No more rubbing issues that I can see/hear. Completely stock suspension with 17x8 Mojave's and 285/70/17 BFG AT's. Pretty happy with it, especially once all this mess gets cleared up.
