New Southern Style Speed Rear Bumper Prototype Installed

We are the first rig to sport the new Southern Style Speed Prototype Rear End for 5th Gen 4Runners so of course we welcome your opinions and questions and will do the best we can to answer them. Below are a few facts...

1.) Yes it has room for independent frame flexing so the bumper and the fenders will not hit during off roading or daily driving.

2.) It will be direct replacement to the stock plastic bumper meaning no cutting (you can craigslist or ebay your old bumper if you want to sell it or put it back on one day)

3.) The ladder is functional (we have tested with a 225lb guy so far) it has rubber stoppers preventing it from hitting the window while making it appear free standing. It has the same stepping room as our old gobi ladder did.

4.) They will have a drop down hitch option like many other rear bumpers out there but if you want the max clearance you have to do as we did and cut a section of the frame in the rear to allow the hitch to slide. (we know our tail pipe is right now the lowest point in the above pics... it is being cut off and relocated as I type)

5.) Dual swing arms for a barnyard style door opening complete with assisted shocks to support the weight

6.) Hi-lift jack holder, dual jerry can holder and ofcourse tire holder will all be options.

7.) It will have a license plate holder (just havent relocated it yet)

8.) Rear view camera can be moved to the inside of the tire mount.

It wont be available to the public for at least a month while we put it through its paces. As the flagship vehicle for Nomadders.com and RuggedPix.com it will be part of their upcoming mini video series #FLtoMaine and in a weeks time will have experienced multiple terrains. The trip will be 4,000 to 5,000 miles roundtrip when it is all said and done and it will be thoroughly tested and any issues will be corrected before it goes into production but if you like it, Southern Style Speed promises it will be competitively priced and worth the wait. Good looking bumper overall. I'm torn on how I feel about the ladder though. I think it looks cool but would probably prefer Gobi ladder compatibility.

how is ladder held on? looks like it's bolted into place, but hard to tell. Are there tabs that bolts run through?

Not sure if it looks badass, or if that's your pictures. Either way...it looks badass on my monitory. Is it painted? Looks sorta like your rims...are those painted/ powdered or dipped?

I'd be interested to know how this is being done. So I'll wait till I see how it's executed before postulating.

I still have qualms about the need to make the bumper completely replace the body panel, and knowing how much things can flex. We've discussed that on other venues, but given that this is new and a prototype I'm sure there's room for improvement.

Are there plans to add lights to the plate area, or have it pre-wired or something?

Honestly we said the exact same thing! you can ask southern style speed yourself haha but he asked me to trust them and let them try something new and it came out awesome. We loved our gobi! But this has quickly grew on us and thats all i can really say on that.

Yes I am 90% positive there will be a bumper light cut out as an option and you will likely be able to purchase the lights as well right from Southern Style

I'm assuming they moved the ladder to the side in order to keep the jerry cans and spare tire closer to the vehicle. It's a good idea, just looks out of place.

Its not for everyone but thanks for the honest opinion. Also its an add on option so you can choose to do without it. (if you decided you liked the rest of the bumper)

Your Runner is coming along nicely and that color really change the look of those wheels. Its awesome that we have another choice for the rear bumper.

It'll mount very similarly as we do our rear GX relocation kit. With a supplied 6 wire lengthened harness you'll simply splice it into the 4 wires needed for the camera, 1 wire for reverse lights, and 1 wire for license plate lights. This new harness would exit the oem grommet, down the door, and run through the swing arm to its new location in the tire carrier mount.

I have a couple questions...

- How much does this weight ???
- Will it come in an aluminum option ???

The major problem I have with this is the frame cutting and the ladder hanging out in the middle of no where. A bang against tree or there might be an rock in the right spot to push that thing into the glass; with just enough force to crack it.

- so can we have the option of no ladder ???
- Can a lower tow hitch for no frame cutting option ???
- Can this be used with the GobI ladder ??? Since alot of us just bought Gobi Racks...
