I climbed under the truck with a wire brush and a rag and went to work. I've got quite a bit of work left to do, but it's really not too bad under there, just surface rust (even at the shock mounts) and many areas are rust-free. Once I finish up with the rust removal I need to do, and do the painting, it will look great (or a lot better anyway).

I'm thinking in addition to the wire brush, I could get a wire wheel for my drill. Are there any other tools out there that would be good for removing rust?

Also, I'm wondering about the suggestion to spray the area with WD-40...would the paint have a difficult time adhering to the area (even after wiping with a rag before painting) after the WD-40 application? Thanks.

Hey, thanks for the input. I already *did* buy it actually...a couple of weeks ago. I looked underneath before I bought it, but I didn't look that carefully and the lighting wasn't the best, I wasn't really expecting to see much rust on an 02, even one from back East anyway...

It wasn't until I got it home and looked more carefully underneath that I saw the rust on the shock mounts etc. then I started to wonder if I had made a mistake buying the truck. Hence my decision to post here and get some feedback. However, people like you are saying it's not too bad so I'm feeling better about it all!

BTW what do you mean by 'latch shock'?

I meant to say the rear hatch/tailgate shocks, that hold the tailgate open, i wouldnt expect yours to be fried as mine still sorta work, they are nothing major.

You made a good purchase, there is nothing bad on the car, it is a regular northeast 4runner, it will last a long time.
