New to the club...2001 Sport and I have questions.

First, I bought a new HU for it and tried to install it last night but the wiring harness adapter I bought at Walmart had 4 plugs and non of them matched. I'm pretty familiar with Toyota stuff as I've owned two Tacoma's and a Celica.

A couple other things I couldn't really find an explanation for in the manuel are, what is the rectangle ECT button do that is in the middle of the dash, what's the red circle button on the left of the steering wheel and finally what does the Trac off button do towards the bottom left.

Electronically Controlled Transmission

is what it stands for. Depressing it adjusts the shift points higher allowing higher rpms for either faster acceleration and/or hills.

I think the red button is an alarm armed LED, regional dealer installed item (gulf states toyo). You'll know when it stops working cuz your horn will blast all the time.

Trac off turns the electronic traction control off-uses wheel spin monitors/brakes/engine throttle to do this. Many on here complain of difficulty starting up from a standstill on ice and/or slippery surfaces, turning Trac off helps with that.

I had that problem with my HU too, there is a small amp that you must remove. The plug in that goes to the back of it is what matches the wiring harness for the new radio. Make sure you have the stock amp out and it will save you a lot of headaches.

Did you remove the factory amp from behind the head unit? Should look something like this.



Once that is removed, your adapter should only be two plugs. There are two factory plugs going into the back of the factory amp, and one coming out. Remove the factory amp and get a new adapter.

A couple other things: the power antenna is broke, but you can still hear the motor running when turning off and on. How hard is it going to be to fix this? I really don't care if it power or not, just want a good signal. Next, it did not come with keyless entry remotes, but looking at the papers it came with it looks to have originally came equipped with it. Can I just but remotes online and program them? And lastly, when I was trying to put the HU in last night I noticed there are two antenna plugs in the stock HU and Pioneer HU only has a place for one regular plug, not the small one. Is this going to be an issue?

No idea on the keyless entry. As for the antenna a common mod is swap a Tacoma whip antenna in which there are plenty of write ups on. You have two antennas, the main one next to the hood and a secondary in your right rear quarter panel/cargo window. If you look up 4-Ripcord he did a write up on how to combine the two antenna cables for your radio; personally I just ran the cable to the hood antenna and it works fine, not to mention if you blow out your rear window (like I did) it costs a lot more to get a new panel with the antenna integrated to it so I don't have the secondary any more regardless.

If you antenna is broke and plan on replacing it. You can just use the single plug that is routed to the front passenger side. Some people try fixing the antenna, and some replace it. I just replaced my broken antenna with a cheap one from Autozone, and it's pretty good. I also saw our remotes at Autozone, but have no idea how to program them. I do know there are a couple threads on here that tell you how to program it.

Remove it totally. It's held in by two screws. It's pretty pointless to leave it in since you won't be using it. Plus it frees up some room back there.

Mine was doing the same thing and I just replaced the mast with this one. My mast cable was broken off in the power unit so I had to take the motor apart. To access the motor you have to go through the fender well. This added an extra 45 minutes to process, but even with this it was simple. If you pull the mast out and the entire cable is connected it will take you 10 minutes.

Mine didn't come with remotes either. I'm fairly certain all 3rd Gens came equipped with keyless entry standard, but I could be mistaken. When I looked into buying remotes it was going to be about the same cost to buy two remotes as it was to get remote starter, so I opted to install a remote starter I bought off of ebay for around $50.

If the antenna still gets reception, you can just leave it there. If the motor is annoying you, there are several ways to address that. 1) unplug antenna relay (located behind the radio); 2) unplug the connector at the antenna itself. Of course, if you unplug the connector at the antenna, you're half way done with swapping out antennas so you might as well go ahead and do it.
