New to the Old (Classic)

So I just picked up a 1985 Toyota 4Runner w/ a 22RE and 5 speed. I have been searching for quite some time and finally found one. It's in kind of rough shape but I don't think I'm in over my head yet. I am not sure what direction I want to go yet, but I do know that this forum will help make my decision. Looks like first thing is fixing the electrical issues.

She might not be in the best shape, but she is mine!!!

Now I have 2!!!

First, I would like to restore it mechanically. A lot of what needed to be done for that has been done already. Now I just need to go through some of the electronics to fix some issues preemptively. Then over time just clean it up to its original glory and have a clean/capable classic!

It looks like it is in really decent shape. I am really digging those factory size tires, we never see them on 4runners anymore. I actually like those white steelies with the white top. i guess I am an old man.

Thanks! Like I said, I'll try to get some more pictures soon.

I am not actually too fond of the white steelies with the pizza cutters, but they will certainly do for now! There are a couple of troubled areas on the body but these days it is in great shape for what I paid for it. It is hard to find an 85 at all today, let alone one in decent shape. Mechanically the guy I bought it from did a lot of work, I still have to do a little more before I can mess with the cosmetics.

Do we know of any other seats that might fit these things? Mine are kind of rough.

Same color than mine, but yours's SAS. The PO of yours removed the aluminium trims from the fenders and from the windshield, maybe they didn't came from factory that year, but it's better without them in my opinion. The door handles're black, I like that.

Possibly, but if you read up on some of the mods/fixes RAD4runner does he explains certain electrical issues from factory.

I paid $3750 for it. Prices around the Southeast are kind of steep. This was the only one I could find in decent shape that was under $4500. I promised the guy if I ever ended up in a bind, I would go to him first.

From what I know, this one is a Base model 85.. I love it though! I just really want to clean it up, straighten some things out on it, and then start to build it..

just a minor point of contention. an 85 is a factory straight axle. so it would be FSA.
an SAS if for anything after 85 that has been swapped to a straight axle.

I guess it's no real issue, I've just seen a few post where people will add in relays and beef up the electrical to prevent any issues. Also, I saw one where putting in this certain relay actually fixes the starter issue. (The one where you turn the key several times, nothing happens, then suddenly it starts right up). Mine actually did it once over the weekend and it has a brand new starter.

i have never experienced that with my 85.

I remember reading something about a starter relay, but I thought it was on the later years, and didn't affect the 85.

This? i had to do this mode on my 87' to get rid of the infamous click no start.
