New Ultra Gauntlet wheels

I got around to putting some new wheels and tires on my 4Runner today! I went with some Ultra Gauntlet wheels on some 265/70/R17 Nitto Tera Grapplers. Sorry for the crappy pic below but in person they look great, I got some compliments at the tire shop. Initial impressions on this tire are good...No noticeable noise, they ride comfortable, tread is aggressive, and they have two different sidewall options for when your mounting them. I live near some nice Desert trails so i'm gonna test them out while camping this weekend.

One interesting thing while at the shop is that the technician told me i was riding around on a dangerous tire that has a recall out on it. He was referring to my Dunlop GrandTrek AT20 113s. Recall only affects 265/70/R17 size. He showed me documentation on them. I was hoping i could get a good price from them, that was my plan when i was driving over to the shop but they told me they couldn't buy a recalled tire. I never received anything from Toyota....I wonder if my 4R was shipped with these recalled tires or my dealership put them on. Apparently its a manufacturing defect that involves a bad bead that could lead to a blowout or loss of pressure slowly. Well it was a surprise to me but my new setup is way better. I'm gonna try to sell the Tires on CR or something and i already have a buyer for my stock SR5 wheels.

I'll try and do that, might visit the shop tomorrow if i got time. i just gotta figure out how and where to digitize it so i can post it up. Mainly Toyota FJs were affected but some 4Runners too. I just skimmed over the thing while at the shop.

Everything I see online seems to be from 2006-07.

Lots of post about these and the Bridgestone Dueler H/Ts, it was not a tire defect. But a Toyota recall from damage done during tire mounting. An excerpt from the recall notice here.

My guess is they have fixed the way they install them..

P265/70R17 113S or Dunlop Grandtrek AT20 P265/70R17 113S tires, there is a possibility that the inner bead
of the tire may have been damaged. If the bead is damaged, a bulge may develop on the sidewall of the tire
and/or air may leak from the area of the damaged bead.



As this is not a tire manufacturer recall, but a Toyota recall, customers will be instructed to bring their vehicle into
an authorized Toyota dealer.

Just don't see anything more current online.

I dug up the same info on that tire. I'm sure all has been fixed On the Toyota side as far as how they install them. When the technician was punching up tires and what fits on my 4R on his computer he got a red flag on my oem tire. He went out looked at it, un mounted it, got some more info off the rubber and he told me i was on a recalled tire. Its possible he was wrong, i know nothing about tires but he seemed pretty knowledgeable. He had a small folder of recalled stuff. He wasn't trying to sell me tires, i brought in my own Nittos all i bought from them were the wheels so i was leaning towards believing him....i'm still not sure. he was just concerned for my safety, nice guy.

Nice wheel and tire choice! You have the little brother version of my combo (except I have the trail grapplers). These wheels fit the styling of the 5th gen perfectly IMO. Looks good!

Nice! My favorite wheel for our trucks and I would love a set. My only issue is that I have stock size KM2's and I'm afraid I won't have enough sidewall bulge with a 9" rim.

What do you think?

When you got your new rims and tires mounted, was there any problems with the automatic tire senser valves? Did the shop have to re-program them,Where they able to get the codes from toyota without many phone calls? Any feedback would be helpful, I am looking to change out my rims and tires.

Hi, the whole install went fast and smooth, the only issue was the toyota oem wheel lock was not compatible with the new wheels. As far as the TPMS (sensors) I was charged $5 per wheel to have them transferred over. It went smooth, the truck recognized them and the technician didn't have to do any programming just a reset with an electronic tool they had at the shop. I think when you buy all new sensors is when you'll have issues. If you go that route you have to take it in to your dealer so they can program the Ecu to recognize them. My recommendation is to have them transfered over to your new wheels.....seemed like a very easy process.

Went back to my local shop and the tech showed me on his computer the warning that came up. But like stated above seems its an old recall having to do more with Toyota rather than the tire. I was just wondering if any others who have the same tire got any notice like i did from their tire shop. I think since it affected some FJ's and 4runners they assumed mine was affected. I appreciate their concern though it just alarmed me for a bit.

Nice wheels those are the ones I'm thinking of getting too.
One question, did you have to get spacers or anything else to make those Guantlet's fit? Also any rubbing issues?

Hi! Um no spacers they fit perfect and the 265/70/R17 Nittos have no rubbing issues even when fully turned. In my opinion its a good set up. The wheel specs are: Offset: 12mm, Backspacing: 5.43", Bolt Pattern: 6-139, Weight: 24.8lbs. I'm not sure what the OEM SR5 wheel/tire combined weight was, the truck feels good...more planted and i have way more traction now. I say go for it!!!

Would the 275 cause rubbing?
I want to see how much the tire bulges from the rim.

Cool I'll try and take some close ups tomorrow. Since i'm not lifted yet i wanted to stay with the stock configuration. When i do a lift i'll size up and see what fits best. I think a 275 would be a close fit but no rubbing issues on a stock 4Runner, it would be close though. For now i just wanted a basic upgrade from stock set up to get me to my favorite camping and fishing spots...I think it looks great, i've been turning lots of heads.

Got to test my new tires today out in a spot called Truckhaven here in southern California. Lots of desert trails and steep climbs. I was only there a bit but next week i'm planning on spending the day there. Here is just one pic. Lots of loose sand and rocks on the trail. I have an SR5 and i only had to use 4Low in conjunction with ATrac a handful of times and that was to climb some steep grades. I even impressed a jeep guy, guess they were at the top of the hill taking bets i wouldn't make it. A nice lift is on the horizon for me.
