New vs. Used (again), is the CPO warranty worth it?

I am kicking around the idea of selling my 4th gen and upgrading to a 5th gen limited. I want a limited for the center diff that allows for full time 4wd, much like my 4th gen has. I was looking at the prices for these things in Seattle (lol, that part of the country has gone completely batshit with everything when it comes to price and consumer costs) and for some reason used can actually cost MORE than new, used 2014's with 25k miles on them. My question is this: do you think the CPO warranty is worth not getting a brand new truck and getting a gently used rid instead for "about" the same price?

I would definitely want a post-face lifted truck, not only for resale and whatnot, but also because it always seems as though Toyota sneaks through small upgrades here and there in post-face lifted T4Rs that they don't tell anyone about and very few know about until a trend develops after a number of years (3rd and 4th gen V6 head gaskets come to mind).

Thanks

Every vehicle traded in does not automatically qualify as CPO. There is a reason Toyota will warranty it out to 100k. Obviously if the used vehicle is the same price, you get the new one. Most likely you can talk them down much further on a used vehicle and save on the warranty vs. new. Using completely random numbers off the top of my head, it would look like this (I have no idea what the market looks like in SO Cal, but it's crazy in Co so Ill go with that): New is 40K+ and then add $1500 for an extended warranty. Used it would be something like $34k negotiated down to $32-33K and it already has a 100k warranty. The difference between $33k and $40K is $7k - literally years worth of gas.... It's really up to you. You will pay for knowing the history of the vehicle (new) and you could potentially pay for not knowing the history if it is used. I guess my point is simple.. Toyota thinks the vehicle will not cost them much in the next 75k miles, and they are probably right. Otherwise it would not be CPO.

CPO is not something you should consider more valuable than new...It's crap. Just a way to raise the price of a depreciated vehicle.

Basically a 1 year warranty. The 100k 7yr is limited powertrain only and the chances of that having issues in that time frame is slim to none.

Thanks guys.

A new Runner is sort of a need and a want. I have been thinking about getting a new car for a while, basically because my 4th gen has been more like a Jeep than a 4runner. Too many problems, and now I am dealing with a climate control servo issue and that has probably pushed me over, especially since it'll for sure need a new A/C compressor in the near future as well. It's on its 3rd rear diff in 80k easy miles, it's stock and used mostly as a commuter on open highway and the occasional mountain trip in the snow. It's paid for so selling it will be simple, I may just sell it myself now and look around for a decent deal on a leftover 5th gen.

In order to find a used 5th gen for the low-mid 30's I'd definitely have to leave the West Coast. There are very few 4wd's in general in Kalifornia, and places like Seattle are just mental with prices, thinking on it overnight I could no way justify spending 44k on a 2014 4runner with 25k miles like they seem to be fetching up there.

If you are currently living in Seattle you should look in BC. You get a 30% discount because the CDN $ has gone down a lot in the last 18 months.

That's actually an interesting idea, fortunately I'm not living in Seattle, but I do have family there, hence my search pointing in that direction. I was also considering looking around Utah or another "snow" market with lower consumer prices than the West Coast, hopefully I'll be able to save about 3-4k on a 5th gen that way if I decide to go that route.

From Seattle, check out flying into Bozeman, MT and driving back. From sounds of it can save you a bundle - ResslerMotors in Bozeman.

Isn't that where the Expedition Overland guys are out of with their rig on display on the showroom?
