Better gas mileage!

To be fair my truck is new so it could just be the fact that's it's breaking in or the new wheel tire combination helped.

For the first several tanks I was getting 19 mpg. That's a mix of highway and rural driving. Then I purchased SCS Stealth 6 wheels and Pirelli Scorpion Verde A/S Plus tires in the stock size. The wheels are lighter than the stock wheels but by how much I don't know. The tire are classified as a CUV/SUV touring tire and are low rolling resistance tires. After install my first tank of gas shot up to 21.6 mpg. Just filled up today and the gauge had 21.8 mpg. I'm not a slow driver either. Not bad for just a wheel and tire change. Especially when I was expecting the opposit to happen.

Whatever the reason, being break in or new wheels/tires, I'll take the increase in fuel economy and be happy. My FJ could never even dream of getting almost 22 MPG.

now deduct 2-3 miles from the computer because its off. Still great mileage though. Wait until you start modding it which absolutely will happen and the gas mileage will drop significantly.

Haven't tested the accuracy of the gauge but I'll be sure to do that next.
 
Hand calculating MPG is the only way to go. Computer gets you in the ball park but I wouldn't count on it. I use an app called "FillUp" that works good and tracks trends.

I used a Scangauge II in my FJ but just haven't installed it in the 4R as it has its own gauge. I may just set it up for one tank for fun and see how the two compare vs hand calculation. Should be interesting.
 
My first tank (my fill,not the dealer) came in at 19.5, exactly what the computer showed.

I wonder how much a Low Rolling Resistant (LRR) tire would increase the MPGs?

As I said before they are classified as a touring tire for CUVs/SUVS. It's a street or highway tire. I'm running these in the warm months and early fall and then will switch to BFG KO2's in the stock size mounted on the stock wheels for the winter or if I ever go off-road.

One thing though, the tires run big as far as sizing. The tread width for a 265/70/17 is 8.6 inches which is almost as wide as a BFG KO2. They look beefy compared to the stock Duncraps and ride 100 times better.
 
It's probably breaking in. Based on personal experience and discussions with a few Taco-owning friends, the 4.0L tends to pick up mileage over the first 20,000km or so.

There, that's my first post in one of the dozens of "fuel mileage" threads. Do that many people really buy 4Runners based on their fuel efficiency? :confused:
 
Gonna chime in, low rolling resistance tires are not just a marketing gimic. I noticed better milage when I got a set of Toyo Open Country H/Ts.....
 
I disagree on the mpg computer

Unless mine is not normal:

My mpg gage is dead on!

My odometer is less than 1% off.

My speedometer is less than 1% off.

These I have checking against the gps (2), the mileposts on the highway between Fernley and Lovelock (every mile for fifty five miles) and gallons to fillup at the same gas station for the past eight months....
 
only 1100 miles on my LE and computer showing 19.2 - no re-sets. No idea how accurate and I'll probably never check. Decided to leave Yokos on until first flat tire - already have set SR5 wheels for replacement. Experience in my neck of woods and I don't trust P rated tires - time will tell.

This is where I was, 19 mpg but I reset at every fill up. Miles are about the same too, I'm at or close to 1000 miles. I have an SR5 though, not a LE.

My earlier post was not directed at you lol. It's just whenever someone posts about their mpg everyone else feels the need to post theirs too! It's like a secret signal was sent out!
 
16.8 here, but only a quick 4 mile trip to work each way, and towing every other weekend 65+ miles to the track and back.

MPG OBSERVATION TEAM...ASSEMBLE!
