New Wheels & Tires vs TPMS Sensors

Howdy All!

So, I'm considering buying new wheels and tires for my 2021 ORP. How do you deal with the TPMS Sensors? Do you buy new all the way around? Do you swap out from the current? Cost of new sensors wasn't inexpensive last I recall. I wouldn't imagine the extra labor cost to swap out the old sensors will be cheap either?

I would rather not have to deal with a warning light on my dash. Currently have <3k miles on them.

Appreciate any real world feedback ideas.

I no longer run sensors in mine. I also did away with the light on the dash by modifying the TPMS system in the dash. Not everyone’s favorite solution but I don’t need a light on my dash to tell me my tires are low.

Your 2021 can deal with another set of TPMS sensors or reuse the existing ones. I'd suggest reading the owners manual. It can all be programed from the dash.

That wasn't really my question. It was whether people swap out the old sensors to the new or buy new ones.

Toyota TPMS sensors should last 8-10 years. I wanted to preserve these vs buying aftermarket sensors.
I had mine removed from OE wheels and reinstalled on new SEMA wheels. When purchasing tires at Discount Tire, this was all included in mount and balance of $20/tire. Well worth it for me to not see a light on my dash.
FYI- if you plan to resell your OE wheels and tires, keep them separate. I made more this way selling wheels to a Tacoma owner and Tires to a Dodge truck guy. My 2 cents, maybe worth less.

Cool! I didn't know Discount Tires will do that too. That is definitely the route I'm going to take then. I thought the fee for that would be a lot higher. And good recommendation on selling separate! Much appreciate the knowledge sir!

ETA: Going to go with Falken Wildpeak AT3W on TRD Pro wheels. I know, very common, but an awesome combo!

If you want my 2 cents, don't swap them over. Why? Because I've seen more than a few sensors destroyed when somebody attempts to move them. Personally, I leave the factory ones in my OEM wheels and buy a new set for my snows. That said, one has to look at how long you plan on running any particular set of wheels. Up here in the rust belt, my snows are on for at least 4 months out of the year.

You won’t feel the difference between 33 and 28 PSI but if you get the alert and can see how slow or fast it’s leaking, you know whether you can make it down the road to Walmart Tire Center for a patch, or if you need to park it RIGHT here, right now.

I have a gut feeling there’s this archetype of a car buyer who insists navigation, leather seats, and Bluetooth are all “gimmicks” to pad profit, and will stick a 3-way lighter socket adapter into his brand new 2022 Base Model to power his TomTom, flip phone, and 12V coffee maker. Because Starbucks just wants your money [emoji23]

Ahhhh it’s kind of like the “too late” light if you can’t see pressures. I have a 2012 (different brand) that’s like that. I don’t even know if the alert works!

My 17 4runner is the first vehicle I've had with that particular nanny light.
Yes, I know I aired down at the beginning of the trail.
Yes, I know to air back up.
Yes, I check my tire pressure with a gauge weekly at a minimum. Have been for 45 years.
Don't need a light.

You can do what I did and purchase a Autel 501 programmer and four Autel MX sensors and then use programmer to copy the transmitter codes from your Factory Toyota sensors and then program the same codes into your new Autel MX sensors before installing in wheel. I can now switch between factory and aftermarket wheel and tire sets and vehicle sees whatever set I am running.

I’ve went from TRD off-road, TRD sema Pro, to low-offset extra wide aftermarket wheels 33” tires on the same set of OEM sensors. My tire shop swapped them over every time, no questions asked as its part of their mounting fee.

Do I need TPMS on trails? Nah, but it’s nice to get an immediate warning on long road trips when you’re back on the road and have a slow leak.

So a complete new set is around $342.85 for all five wheels

Do I need TPMS on trails? Nah, but it’s nice to get an immediate warning on long road trips when you’re back on the road and have a slow leak.

Until one of the other posters mentioned above, I didn’t know that they would do that as part of their regular fee. Thanks for the confirmation.

Autel programmable MX sensors are $20 each off eBay., look identical to factory sensors.
