Newer Models Make Me Laugh

In reply to Shibby, I'm somewhat confused as well. This is an amazing engine for reliability. Sure it's not the most powerful, but you know that before you buy it.

How many other engines do guys repeatedly buy with 160-180,000 miles on them and confidently start a build, knowing it's completely possible that the engine will last another 100-200,000 miles.

While I'm certainly no expert, one of my best friends owns a successful garage in NorCal and when I was looking for a truck/SUV, he said, "Buy a third gen Runner. Take care of them and they'll last forever." I bought my rig with 132,000 miles and that's considered low mileage for the year.

I mean, c'mon, what else can you ask for (besides more horsepower, I guess)?

I can't imagine any more that I would want.

Dimensional, it is a great size, I can park in any parking situation. Travel down narrow trails and i am at the the perfect height for banks and drive threws.


Best of all - It is paid for and if anything goes wrong with it, I can fix it on the cheap.

Much better for power or reliability? For power, obviously. For reliability . . . thats debateable

Power and efficiency.

Yes, for it's time it wasn't bad. 20 MPG was bad, but it was accepted because fuel was cheap and everybody was making gas guzzling engines. Here is where GM, if it wasn't as dumb as it was would be PUSHING it's fuel efficient engines. Their 3.1 and other engines had good power and got good mileage, instead they were doing what? They could have had the jump on rest.

These days, there is no reason this engine couldn't do 30-35 MPG and be just as reliable.

In this thread, we are comparing old vs new. New engines will last and are producing hugely greater power and efficiency. This engine isn't at the brink of power vs reliability by any means. It's a well built, solid motor, with bad gas mileage and mediocre power.

Give it time, there will be better engines which make NEW vehicles better.

Just adding to the debate. I love my 4R. I would really like it with a supercharger and better mileage, but I'll settle for a supercharger =)

Hey Shibby, I wasn't trying to be critical at all cuz I enjoy debates as well and like hearing other people's feedback. I've had other trucks, Chevy and GMC, and my Chevy Silverado lasted for 220,000K, which is great when you consider how poorly I treated it during my college years. It finally punished me by blowing a rear main seal.

I too would love a supercharger, but I can't imagine spending the money unless I score an unbeatable deal. But I see it in my dreams...supercharger...charger...ger...
 
If I were going to do an engine swap, I would pull a Singtoe and go for the 2UZ-FE for power, and the 22re for a solid 4 banger. The V8 of course would be my first option, but that 22re would definitely be the second! Haha, I know comparing a V8 to a V4 is silly but I am comparing apples to oranges.

At least we dont have Ford engines! The 2004-2008 forums on their site have to be a mile long of "My truck ****ing sucks! I have a crack in my block and I took my truck to get milk! Please help!!"

Can you imagine after putting around 50,000 miles on your truck that you would have to spend another $6000 to replace your motor! Thank God I didn't get an F250.

Appears the same with with rangers. Their forums are full of engines being replaced.

I do believe older Toyota's are the safe bet. I hope it stays that way in the future.
 
I don't like the look of the gen 4 and gen 5, 4Runners they are getting uglier by the year.
The 3rd Gen looks very nice.

Toyota needs to come back with the 3rd Gen looks and put something similar to a Chevy Volt type engine in it.
A Japanese made 4 cylinder diesel that powers the electric engine and charges batteries.
Something that gives 40+ miles to a charge plug in before the diesel engine kicks in to recharge and run the electric engine.
Have a 20 gallon tank and you would get about 800+ miles to a tankful.

Excellent gas mileage, massive torque, very reliable.
That would be the ultimate 4Runner.

At first I was like, what?! But that is actually a really cool idea. I kinda like the 1st gen pop off roof as well. Kind of implement that. I also like the way the 1st and 2nd gens trunks open. Honestly, the 6th Generation 4runner doesnt NEED to get any bigger. Their starting to look like a Land Cruiser and Sequoia banged and had a baby. The 6th gen needs to be a takeaway from all they have learned from their consumers of what they liked the most out of the past 5 generations and possible new ideas. Car Manufacturers need to speak to their consumers!!!

I started a thread on this a while back but it didnt do that well. The 3rd gen is awesome, but lets be realistic people, it isnt the perfect vehicle in considering tech/mechanical advances over the past 12+ years. My whole premis was that a revamped 3rd gen made today WOULD be the perfect vehicle, at least for us. Check out the thread.

I love the tailgate and yeah I saw a LC the other day and the 5th gens are almost identical size.
