the guy should just pickup a used trans from a wreaking yard for $400 and swap it out.

If I had $3500, it would be mine. Locker and all. PBR should buy this one as another 4runner project.
I am tempted to shoot the guy an offer of $3500 and just do it!
I didnt think it was too out of line...considering it would probably sell in the ballpark of $6k+ in working order. Relatively low miles and a Clean Limited.
I have seen guys asking crazy numbers for trucks in worse shape with lots more miles. I would say $3500- is the number, but for $4500- and a $1000- to throw a tranny in, you have a nice truck for a long time
Agreed, unless your towning, why put an external tranny cooler on? its a little more for a brand new radiator. and probably a more straight forward install than an external... just my 2 cents

Even spending $2k for a new transmission, that's a good price for a 1999 Limited with an E-locker and 155k. Looks to be in good shape, too.
Around here a 1999 Limited 4x4 with 150k would go for at least $7000 and probably more. A dealer would ask $10k easy for such a vehicle if it was in good shape.
If the seller was smart he'd eat the cost of the new transmission and keep it.

Totally agree. I am scratching my head here thinking I should sell my 1999 SR5 and grab this thing.

yeah its worth a lot more, but a damaged vehicle is never worth its value minus the cost of repairs. you have to factor in the time and energy of the new buyer to find or double check the problem/issue and then either repair it them self or pay someone else to repair it. i think this guy would be lucky to get $3500, i wouldnt offer him more than $3000 and thats if the rest of the truck was in pristine condition and up to date. just my thoughts
Agree...I am waiting to hear his response. I asked for more pics and if the timing belt service was done.
I can get a tranny for $400-500 and at the employee rate at the dealer I work at to have one of the techs put the tranny is is about $400-...So I figure if I can get a clean Limited with 50k less miles than I have now. I should try to make it happen. I think I should have no problem getting at LEAST $3500 for my truck.

Exactly what I am doing right now. Have the radiator, cooler, , hoses, fluids, and thermostat all set. I may pick up a trans temp gauge also, I would rather add it while I have the hoses off anyway.
Now all I need is a few hours to do it before it milkshakes on me hehe.
So, I spoke to the guy last night...he thinks after his mechanic flushed the radiator and tranny he is going to drive it and trade it in. I told him a dealer might give him $3500- on a trade in. Pretty annoying when people back pedal...oh well. You guys think $3500 is all the money on this things?? I do. let me know your thoughts.

depending on the quality of the dealer, they might just auction it off.
I understand that, as I actually work for a VW dealer. but my point to him was, I DOUBT they will give him any more than $3500-
Galves value on a 2000 (a year newer) with 113k is $6000- I figured with those miles on a year older car the dealer will probably hit im low at $2500 and maybe go to $3500- to make the deal, depending on what he is looking at for his new car. Oh well...people have to find out the hard way.
