Nitto Ridge Grappler?

Holy F**K these things are quiet!!!
2014 Trail KDSS, 285/70/17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers Load C, TRD PRO Suspension, Cornfed 2/1.5, SPC UCA. Had to remove front mud flaps and push fender liner forward. No rub but i am very close to rubbing cab mount, will have to do CMC.

Thanks for the info. Glad to hear from someone with off-road experience with the non C or E load tires.

I've been doing a ton of reading on this and never thought I'd need to know so much about tires. But, I don't want to regret my tire purchase and/or have to buy new tires right away.

There's no "P" at the beginning of the tire numbers. Just 285/70/R17 116 Q. From what I'm reading, P = P-Metric and no P = Hard Metric or Euro Metric. Non P tires have a heavier load than P tires.

The C and E have LT at the beginning of the numbers, which is "Light Truck" metric. Sounds like LT tires are basically for carrying heavy loads or pulling large trailers. (probably stating the obvious here, but i'm a newbie :)

Having less ply seems like the negative of these tires, the positive is that they are 9 lbs lighter than the C and E, which I'm assuming results in better MPG and they probably are quicker off the line.

Would the concern with lighter tires, be blowing a tire or tearing a sidewall when off-roading or when towing? I don't think I'm going to be doing serious rock crawling, but who knows where this goes eventually. Probably better to have more versatile/durable tires...

Yes, you are more susceptible to sidewall issues because your sidewalls aren’t as thick. Now, will it be an issue? My feeling, for most people, is no. Again, I did aggressive off roading and I towed trailer regularly. All without an issue. More than anything, it comes to peace of mind. If you’re worried they’re gonna be insufficient then trade them now. Nothing worse than second guessing your rig on the trail.

Dang that looks good!!! I’m pissed I got such a good deal on my KO2s because I was going to be all over these. We’ll see what the future holds.

Are those the OEM 7 inch wide TRD wheels? I just bought a set, but have been reading the pros and cons or running 7 inch wheels with 285's.

Do NOT run 285s on a 7” wheel. I did, not knowing it was recommended to run a 7.5” wheel minimal. The shop didn’t say anything and I didn’t research enough.

Anyways, the ride was horrible, I had vibration, the tires didn’t balance, and the contact patches were horrible. Additionally, I actually off-road and I wouldn’t dare air down seeing the profile of the tire. After 200 miles I bought new wheels. I absolutely wouldn’t run 285s on a 7” wheel. Once I upgraded my wheels to 8.5” ALL of the issues resolved with the same tires.

I don't doubt you at all. But, seems like a lot of people are doing it. Unless they're all running the FN version of the TRD wheels with black OEM center caps? I'm not crazy about the silver center caps that FN offers.

I agree with you. I see a lot of people doing it which is why, when I researched it, I thought I’d keep it as it is for a while. It became unbearable and I wasn’t about to ruin the brand new tires I spent good money on. I think you can get away with it and I didn’t think a 1/2” would make that much difference, but it does. I was amazed how all my issues disappeared.

You can certainly try but I’d be cautious about off-roading. The manufacturer recommends a width after a lot of R&D, and it’s apparent to me now for good reason. I think you’ll compromise a lot if you stick with a 7” wheel but I also don’t think it’s dangerous.

I really appreciate the thoughtful response. It's so hard to get black and white answers. Seems like everything is personal preference and depends on your personal setup. These tires are quiet / No they're loud. It will rub / it won't rub. 7 inch wheels are fine / don't do it it's dangerous... I 100% agree that guidelines are based on R&D and probably should put my trust in that over anything else. If I go with the 7 inch wheels I may just stick with 265 tires. Or have to talk to FN about getting their 8.5 inch TRD wheels. Thanks again.

That stinks. I’ve experienced the complete opposite with my 285/70 c rated Ridge Grapplers and 7” TRD Pro wheels. I’ve aired down to 20psi on many occasions off-roading. For daily Driving I run 42psi front and 40 rear.

Same here. Ride is slightly stiffer than stock, no vibes at any speed, took it up to 85mph on the freeway and no vibes, tires balanced fine. Did fine off road - sandy washes/desert rocks (chiva falls Tucson). I wont off road this thing hard enough where i will need to air down (gen1 taco had these duties).

^and those experiences with 7” wheels made it even more confusing for me. I also had the TRD wheels on my short list but was shocked that so many people were running the 285 on a more narrow wheel than recommended.

This does complicate things. Given my experience, I’d say don’t do it but so many people are just fine. The chalk test is what killed it for me...contact patches were horrible and I wasn’t willing to ruin my new tires but every rig is different. Again, the right size wheel fixed all my
complaints but you could roll the dice and maybe be another guy doing just fine on a more narrow wheel. Good luck and let us know!

285s on 17 inch Pro wheels for over 20K miles.
Air down to 15 psi for miles and miles without any issues in super rocky terrain.

I do have to say the extra bulge of the tire in the more narrow wheel looks cool and adds a little extra protection to the wheel...

I ran 285/75/16 tires on stock 2016 Tacoma SR wheels which are 16x7 without a single issue. If you're contact patch is bad, lower your tire pressure. While it may not be recommended, it works just fine if you know what you're doing.

I did lower the pressure, then it was cupping. It never found it’s happy place and I personally realized I was putting lipstick on a pig, forcing something that wasn’t right. That was just my experience

The TRD pro wheels I had already ordered just showed up... I was thinking about returning them and going with wider wheels, but I think I'm going to go with 275/70/17 BFG KO2's on the 7 inch TRD wheels. I'm getting concerned about having to do a BMC, and other (what I would consider major) mods to have it all work like it should with 285's. Also reading that the Nitto RG's are wider than K02's in 285, which could result in more rubbing. If I feel like I don't have a hardcore enough setup eventually, I'd imagine I can sell those wheels/tires and not take too big of a loss.

Plus, I have to get back to my life :) I've been obsessing over what Tire/Rim/Lift to do for a few weeks now. Too many options!
