Nitto Terra Grappler G2 vs Cooper Disco At/3

I know there are a few threads out there on this topic, but my needs are a bit different than the others have posted. My driving needs;

Mostly paved, want as little road noise as possible
Snow - we go skiing as often as possible. Often driving on snow-covered roads
We go skiing in the spring as well, and end up on muddy roads

So looking for a tire with excellent snow and mud traction, and not very loud. I had Duratracs on my FJ Cruiser, they are excellent in snow and mud, but are VERY noisy.

Am I better off with the NTG or the Cooper? or another one altogether?

I know [MENTION=95539]SIRWILLYSC[/MENTION] had a lot of complaints with the Nittos. I like my BFGs alright, but the E load rating is a bit overkill

I've got the AT3s and am very happy with them so far.

I'm having the OEM tires immediately replaced by my dealer (when my '16 TE arrives -- hopefully in a couple of weeks) with Cooper Discoverer AT/W in load range E.

The appear to have similar tread to the A/T3's, but are much more heavily sipped... and they have the "snowflake on the mountain" symbol on them, too. Got 'em from Tire-Rama for $1,095 (for 5 tires -- I'm replacing the spare, too). That's about $219/tire.

I have the G2's and LOVE them. I like the look and think they're pretty quiet for what they offer off road. My T4R is a tank in the snow with them on. Plus I like the warranty with them.

I've run both on my 4Runners. Neither is really good in the mud. The Coopers are a tiny bit better in the snow.
If you want good mud tires they have to have a wide lug to clear the mud from the tread.
If you want a good snow tire it must have a lot of siping. The Cooper is probably the best but not by much. I currently have the Nitto's on with about 30 K and they are a good road tire and a bit quieter than the Coopers after some age. I will probably go back to Michelin M+S next as they are superior to both but more expensive and not as tough looking for those that have vanity issues about having to have that rugged outdoorsy look.

To the guy above recommending BFG and he has only run BFG... how do you know they are better if you have never run anything else?

Still breaking in my Nittos but they are a quiet tire. I have had BFGs and they are loud but the Nittos did fine on my last trip to a rainy trail in Sedona.

If you want a year round tire get something with the mountain & snowflake symbol. It will be much better tire in the winter than one without. Other than that, get whatever is cheap/available/looks good/round/smells nice/floats your boat/...

Man this is a great & informative thread.

Clearly the Nitto & the Cooer are both good tires (along w/ the BFGs that are so pupular here). I’ve read more postivies about the coopers than the nittos, plus they’re cheaper.

I didn’t know about the AT/W until reading this. Its gets good write ups & reviews too. In 17” it’s current’y only available in E, which I know many of you run. I don’t need the added weight of an e and the stiffer side walls are a slight detriment to me.

Thanks, I'll look into these. The Duratracs I had on my FJ Cruiser had the snowflake. If they weren't so loud, I'd get those again.

I just picked up the Nitto G2. So far, I cant complain. Super quiet on the road and comfortable. I had BF KO before hand.

The are not real good in the mud so I though I would try some AT tires for awhile, like the past 150K. After trying the Coopers and the Nittos (both good tires) ultimately they did not do much better in the mud than the Michelins. On the highway there is really no comparison. Now if rugged is the LOOK you want then it's not Michelin lol. We will see. I still have 30K or so to go on these Nittos.

1engineer, leave it to you to pull out the wild card. I had never considered the michilins & went from being sold on the Nittos to being sold on the coopers. I looked up michlians on consumer reports & it's the highest rated AT tire!!!
I don't think I have too much of a vanity prob, never mind the look, if they perform better then they're better.
For me those chunky knobby shoulders, while they do look as 1engineer says"outdoorsy", they don't do me any favors in deeply rutted soft sand.
The. Cooper AT/W also looks like a good option for the north east region. But the michilins......

The most recent Consumer Reports rating ranked the Michelin ltx ms2 the best all season truck/ suv tire (not the best AT tire) and Michelin Defender ltx the best all season tire overall. Note, Michelin's AT tire is the ltx AT2. Ltx ms2's, though not identified as an AT by Michelin, actually get some love from users for decent, mild off road performance. As I understand it, before Michelin introduced a nominal AT tire, the ltx ms was considered its 'AT' tire. Consumer Reports recent ratings scored the Cooper AT/W as one of its highest rated AT tires. FYI, the ATWs come in both LT & P; to look at sizes in the p rating, you have to look at 'suv' tires on the Cooper website.
