No 5th gen in the works, New 4 cyclinder to be added to engine line up

a friend of mine is a trainer for all toyota mechanics and we were talking shop and i was asking about 4runners and a 5th gen and he said at the moment its not happenning, toyota is not working on anything new, just things that are already in the works, he did say that a new 4 cyclinder is being added to the lineup with horsepower ratings close to the v6, so i just thought i would put that out there, i know im busting some bubbles

I think that for now, it's all speculation and guesses. Everyone has a "friend who said..." so there is no way to know what is really going to happen until Toyota publicly comes forth with some information. Time will tell.

I find this news a bit odd considering many people have spoke with Toyota dealer GM's that have personally seen the 2010 4runner at behind the scenes showings(one at LA I believe)?

Another dealer owner over on a edmunds forum thread also confirmed a 2010 4runner for a fall release but did not know much more in terms of details.

Toyota does keep this info very guarded until the last minute, so maybe your friends just have not been formally introduced to the new vehicle yet to keep things from leaking out.

I would think if Toyota had a production vehicle being released in 8 months they would have it at the Chicago Autoshow to get it out to the public

I guess there's also the possibility that Toyota has changed the SUV/4runner model's lifecycle plans (suddenly) based on the global economy and it's effect on the popularity and sales of those vehicles...

well my friend is not a gm at one of the 1000's of dealers, he is the trainer for all service technicians and has been with the company for over 10 years, he said the only new models that are coming out are ones that have been in the works for years and I'm pretty sure if a new one was coming out he should know about it since he in charge if training everyone on how to work on them-

I think its the general consensus that dealers find out about new things AFTER the general public does. When the new Tundra came out I asked a tech who went to Indiana to train on how to service them why the new ones went to 5 lugs instead of 6 like all of Toyota's others and he looked over at a Camry and pointed and said "That has 5." I'd take all dealer knowledge with a grain of salt.

The 4Runner WILL be all new for 2010, if I'm wrong PM me your address and I'll send you $20

Im with will. I had heard the 4runner had been in the pipeline long before the recession hit and it was too late to back out then. Its the oldest current model in the fleet and they take years to design.

I think the rumour of a 4cyl showing up in it as an option might be true considering the economy and future gas prices. As long as the new 4.6L makes it in it, i am a happy camper

New poster, long time lurker.

Now would be a good time for Toyota to release a 5th Gen 4Runner. Those of us with '03, '04, and maybe even an '05 would be interested. Current owners (and even those 3rd Gen owners) who are in a position to purchase a new truck will give serious consideration to purchasing a 5th gen.

I have 115k on my '03 (which I love), but would like to buy a new truck, I'm holding out for the 5th gen that will "hopefully" come out this year... If the 5th gen isn't out this year, I'll keep my runner and purchase a car.

If anyone remembers, 4th qtr of 2002 was a bad economy and the 4th gens came out, I got a smoking deal on my 4th gen.

The 'Runner needs an update (gimmie the 5.7l please) and now is the time to spur sales.

I'm hoping, but not hopeful... As for the techs, I've printed out TSBs and instructions because they didn't know. I have zero faith in the dealership/service dept.

the reason they made the 4.6 engine is specifically for the 5th gen runner and lex gx.
the 5th gen will come out no question, the reason for the delay
is the economy, it cost mega money to market a new vehicle and with sales falling to a all time low its not worth it. it is not a good time to introduce a suv. the 2002 economy wasent nearly as bad as this one. the design and specification are done, if this country wasent such a mess we would hve seen some spy shot already

I see alot of people excited by the 5th gen but how many feel they could be disappointed?

It could become nothing more than another glorified mini-van like the Durango had become. Will it become another pavement pounder and even less off-road capapble which IMO is getting further away from what a 4Runner is supposed to be and does Toyota need another station wagon in their stable of SUVs?
