No way to open rear hatch with key?

Couldn't a set of cheap (thin) jump cables fit under the rear seat, even they are folded down? Just a thought. Be safe.

There is also space under the hood for stuff like that. But mine are under the driver's seat, mainly to avoid having to dig though all the stuff in the back to jump someone (likely) or get jumped (not as likely).

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned dual battery setup yet. Not as cheap as having jump cables or booster accessible but it would completely eliminate dead battery problem.

Read some of the threads on dual battery setups on here. Great idea. When done wrong, it brings with it a whole host of other issues.

is this smart key only? I could have sworn my SR5 unlocks with the key... will have to go out at lunch and check it out

As said, your key in the back sends an electrical signal. It's not mechanically connected to the latch, and in fact, the latch is electric too.

hmmmm.... makes sense if that is the case... but doesnt make sense why it would be designed like that

As said: rear sliding window with a rear liftgate. Electric wiring is more reliable in all cases but this one.

Emergency equipment should always be good quality or you just create more problems at exactly the wrong time.

I never said speaker cable was good either - but it would get the back hatch to work well enough for one to get to their real jumper cable.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. I actually look for problems on my truck just to pick your brains; well that's how it seems sometimes.

Where I hide my.... whoops, I mean, heres the plastic open.

White plastic box of which inside is the emergency manual release handle

Heres what the handle looks like

Now where you see that cicle hole is the ELECTRONIC key hole for opening the rear glass and hatch only if you have power. Now imagine the rear glass down. It sits nicely in the middle making the keyhole on the exit side and the white box where the manual escape lever on the drivers side. Well, that means there no way to make a manual key option because of the rear sliding glass is in the way of both.
