Noise!! When just rear windows are down!?!?

Has anyone noticed that when you just put down your rear windows while driving it sounds like your in a vibrating wind tunnel??? Try it. I rolled my rear driver and passenger windows down (DID NOT roll front windows down) and it is LOUD and ODD! Whats up with that? My 4runner and my girlfriends Jeep Liberty both do this and it drives me nuts! It sounds like your driving with 4 flat tires!

It's just wind turbulance. Some cars, I know offhand the Nissan Pathfinder, have stickers on the rear windows at dealerships that are like disclaimers for this. I have been in other vehicles where the windows rubber and felt trim will also flutter and whistle as well. Not much you can do about it.

Right. But does your 4RUNNER do it too?

Yeah it does, but I always have the front down if I have the rear.

it happens in every car or truck regardless. just the frequency of it coming in reverberating through the front and the rear. it happened in my dads 95 4runner, my 08 4runner, and my bmw 325.

Yeah, the same thing happens in every SUV I've ever owned. Some of them are so bad that they sound almost like a helicopter if you're going fast enough.


Doesn't bother me though... I just open the front windows too.

Yes all my suvs did it, Pathfinder being the worst and the range rover was pretty bad also.

The buffeting can be stopped by cracking the back window just a bit.

the air needs some way to get outta the car and with only the back windows down, there's no where for it to go. So like methodical stated, crack the back window or the front windows. That way air will be able to enter and exit the vehicle, thus eliminating the "helicopter" sound. Also, it happens on my girlfriend's Highlander and Matrix

Mine does the same thing. Low hum helicoter sound for sure.
