Noob to the Max. Tires.

Hey all.

This is such a noob forum for me. So, sorry!


My wife wants new tires. According to popular webistes (discount tires. tire rack. Big o' tire.) my options are super limited.


Do BFG KO2's come in the stock size for a 2001 SR5?
Where can I get these?

What about michelin LTX?
Where can I find those?


Maybe my local shops just don't hold the 4runner size on hand?
Or is it hard to find a decent tire for these?



Coming from the XJ (jeep cherokee) world, we are all about those KO's.... but apparently they don't come in 4runner size?

ko2 is offered in 265/70/16 (stock 4runner size). Costco and discount tire direct stock both the michelins and bfgs. From what Ive seen 265/70/16 is a pretty common size.

Their sites just suck.

What size is on it now and do you want that same size or a bigger/smaller one?

I'm running the larger factory size of 265/70R16.....common as dirt....but Discount's site doesn't even list it for my year (99). In fact, they're telling me my SR5 should have 15s on it. You want to select "View Option Plus Size Tires"...and even that won't list the 265s. Again, the sites just don't know WTF they're talking about.

265 is the tire width in mm, 70 is the height of the tire in percentage of the width, so 70 is 265 * 70% = 185.5. 16 is the rim seat diameter. For overall tire diameter just go to an online table or calculator like above although my 70's are listed as 30" but they actually measure closer to 32", not sure what's up with that.
 
This is the wheel I have.

I would just go out and look for the specific size, but wife is gone all day.

Go look at her tires. She may well have 16s.

NM...saw that she is gone all day. When she gets home; look.

That style of wheel *looks* like the upgraded alloy (painted black) which would likely make it a 16".

However, those tires (from that pic) look undersized.

Are you wanting to know the largest tire you can fit without a lift, do you want the same size or something smaller? Are you looking for something more aggressive, more highway minded or something with a heavier load rating? You're going to need to be more forthcoming if you want help.

I had her take a picture of the wheel.

The tires size is this: 265/70r16


I want the best A/T tire money can buy. This is her daily car and never sees hard wheeling.

I use to love the BFG KO's. Are the KO2's worth it?

My own two cents: I ran the 265/75/16 tire on a completely stock suspension setup and had no rubbing issues at all. As a bonus, the slight increase in total circumference actually corrected the factory speedometer error (e.g. now when it says I'm doing 70 mph, I'm actually doing 70 mph as measured against a secondary GPS unit).

I'm pretty sure you can fit a set of 275s on there, but I'd go to Discount Tire and check prices.

If you can swing it, grab the warranty on those... totally worth it :D
 
Ko2s are the bomb. As far as I'm concerned, they're the best AT tire. Might as well go to 265/75r16 while you're at it too

Good post. I also searching for that kind of post to find and gain some information about pickup tires.
