Not starting each time I get gas

Okay, those last two pics.. I don't have my 3rd gen anymore to check but that definitely does not look right to me.

Forgive me if this has been mentioned already but i had a similar
issue that had one of two solutions.
First time. Turning the clicks more than five times up to ten times.
Second time. New gas cap remedied the issue.

OP. Just went and looked at my 3rd Gen in the garage after seeing the photo you posted. You are missing some things my friend.

That vacuum line goes to the throttle opener. It's plugged on your manifold. If it's disconnected and working correctly it should idle between 900-1900 rpms. If it doesn't it can only be replaced by replacing the throttle body itself. Not sure if it's related to your problem but I suspect not.

Maybe it's something that the 1996-2000 models used. Also I inspected the gas cap and the o ring has cracks in it. So I guess I will order a new cap

The only time it ever acts up is when I put gas in it. It takes about 30 seconds of cranking before it starts, then it will stumble for a bit, sometimes stall. After it clears up I can turn it off and restart it and it's like it never had a problem.

This is also the first vehicle I have owned that I noticed wouldn't hiss after removing the cap.

Mine doesn't hiss, although once in a while it purrs.

Well I checked all vsv valves and they are all properly switching. Also checked hoses and couldn't find any leaks so I'm still not sure what it could be. I did find two hoses backwards on the valves under the hood so I hope that is what was turning the light on.

Sorry to revive an old thread but did you ever fix this?

Mine is doing the same thing. Not at fuel ups though. Just randomly after driving and cuttin it off. Crank crank crank nothing. Crank crank and floor it and it spits and sputters and then fires up. Also getting 14-15mpgs. Feel like your prob is the same as mine.

Yeah I'm in the same boat (hard start after filling up.) my first repair to the car was a new fuel pressure regulator, so who knows what else that effected.

After filling the tank I drive about 100-200 feet and then it shuts off and doesn't want to start for a minute or two and then starts and runs like nothing happened. I just drove from Atlanta to DC and in South Carolina where the roads are rough and it was very hot the car would burp and fart then shut off from time to time. Then when the roads smoothed out in North Carolina it happened maybe once or twice. then later when the sun started going down and the temperature dropped it did not happen at all. But, every time I got gas no matter the temperature it would start and run fine for 100-200 feet and then shut etc. and then run like nothing was wrong. Not sure what MPG I'm getting. Any ideas?

I’d start by looking for sediment in the tank.

What's the CEL code? I've seen similar behavior from a bad evap purge solenoid on other vehicles, but I'm not familiar with our evap system.

You could remove the vapor line from the EVAP and see if it stops. It should have a liquid check valve.

How full do you fill your tank?

Pretty certain this is emissions related but I have a 2001 4runner sr5 4x4 that is stock except for a k&n fipk kit, lift, and one size bigger tires.

The problem I'm having is every time I get gas and I go to start it and it won't start unless I push the pedal to the floor. Each time I fill up I am getting 14-15 mpg 95% hwy. and to clarify fill up I mean when the pump stops on the first click.

I bought this tr4 two months ago and it has been the issue since I bought, I should also mention I am getting the good ol po440, po441, po446 codes but when I search them nobody else seems to have an issue like mine. I'm hoping I don't need to replace the charcoal canister, I am looking for things to trouble shoot first and not throw parts at it. Thanks in advance

New to the forum but used this thread to find a solution. I had the exact problem with my 3rd gen of having trouble starting ONLY after refueling. I replaced the evap canister and the canister purge solenoid and the problem went away. I also noticed an improvement in the gas milage not a CRAZY difference but it is noticeable.

My 2002 is doing the exact same thing. When I fill up, it will stall when I put it in gear. After I get it going on the road, it runs fine. I only have this issue at the pump and I do not overfill the tank (just first click). I have taken the cap off and back on to see if I can recreate it and its like noting ever happened. I ran a DTC scan and it threw P0440 EVAP and a P0420. I cleared the codes and installed a new gas cap and the CEL has not come back on but I am still having this issue when I get gas. Has anyone found the solution?

it could be the VSV for EVAP under the hood. it's a vacuum solenoid that opens/closes to let fuel vapors from the charcoal canister go to the intake. if it gets stuck open, fuel vapors flood the intake while you fill up, causing the hard start. you can take it off and blow through it to see if it's stuck open

Did you ever find a solution? I am facing the same thing. Took it to the shop and had it checked for leaks, no leaks. Replaced the gas cap with no luck. The shop said the only thing they could think it would be is the charcoal canister, which sucks because I replaced it roughly 8 years ago.
