Not your average tire thread... LE 20" AT's?

So I took the 4runner out for the ski trip I make every weekend, and this was the first time where I had some accumulation on the surface. I could feel the thing sliding a little bit at speed, with less than 1" of slushy stuff on the ground.

Question 1:
I now asked my service rep at the dealer (I've known him for 20 years) if there is "something we can do about the tires?". We'll see if we can put something together. Has anyone had the dealer swap out tires for free?

Question 2:
I've seen some posts with some of the tires on LE's, but can't seem to locate them. I'm debating on getting the BFG ATs (RWL in of course), but at the same time, they are a bit burley for the refined look of the LE (not that the others aren't as refined, but this is pretty much designed for 98% street use.) What other tire options have you come across that is a good mix between AT/AS?

Hankook Dynapro RF10, Nitto terra grapplers, Michelin LTX2, Goodyear silent armor. Just to name a few. Any of those will be better than the OEM tires for what you need. I'm trying out the Hankooks right now. So far I do like them.

That's the thread.. The only LE in there (with 20" wheels) is the silver one with BFG ATs... Has anyone else put a beefier tire on the 20's?

I know you're looking for AT tires but to answer your question, yes. See my sig. I actually sold my 275/55R20 Hankook Dynapros for the Nittos Trail Grapplers MT.

Edit: Just realized you were talking about beefier tires on the OEM 20s, not 20s in general. I did have the Dynapros on the OEM 20s though.

What kind are they? What size? How are they on the highway?

Their 275/55-20's. Cost, same as others, around $190/tire.

They ride great, quiet and smooth. Wear seems to be really good to.

Highly recommended.

A mod is currently running the cooper zeons over on tacomaworld and has very good things to say about them. For a 18 or 20'' wheel, I'd go with them.

Here's my limited with Revo's. Ride nice, look better and if they perform like the ones I had on my gen4, they'll be decent in the snow.

Hey two quick questions for ya: I had the Revo's on my 4thGen and my 3rdGen and loved them. Did you lift (or at least level your limited) to fit the 275's? Any rubbing? I also noticed your mud flaps, are they the Husky's? Are you happy with them, did they simply mount on?

I didn't do a thing. Just replaced the stock tires. No rubbing whatsoever. Very pleased with them. Those are Husky mud flaps and they're okay. Not particularly thrilled with them, but until something better comes out, they do keep the sides protected. They have a lip on the inside that I'm guessing will make a nice shelf for snow and mud to gather on, but all in all, they're not bad. Very easy to mount in the stock holes. I think it took maybe 15 minutes to put all 4 on.

I don't see many of you in the northern states - but would really like some feedback on the listed tires in this thread and snow/ice.

I have the Revo's on mine. I took it skiing in the mountains and down some forest service roads to get to some trailheads and all in all I'm pleased. We didn't have as much snow as some years so the most I drove in was probably no more than 8 inches, but no problems at all - and the ride of the Revo's is nice. I've now put about 20k on them and they seem to be holding up well (I should add that's mostly highway).

Any insurance concerns when you go outside of recommended sizes on LE? I would hate to put 275's that are recommended for 8+" rims on, then get in a wreck and have my insurance deny coverage as a result of the tire choice.

After some 35 years working in the insurance industry, I can pretty much assure you that unless it was the tire(s) themselves that caused an accident, it will not be an issue. (Just like most any other mod or after market part). If the tires you put on were placed by a dealer on the wrong size rims, and you DID NOT know the combination was dangerous, and because of the mis-matched tire to rim caused an accident, well it is pretty easy to say it was the dealer who was negligent. Most dealers will NOT install a dangerous combination just for this issue. So, my suggestion is to talk with a dealer and see if recommended size combo at issue is really "dangerous" or just a suggestion for ride comfort, or better tire wear or whatever other reason(s) outside of safety. But if a safety concerns do come up.......go another route.
