NTB will damage your rims

Well, according to sales manager. It goes thusly:

NTB "Hi can I help you?"

Me "Yea, I need Nitto TG for 04 T4R SE set of 5"

NTB "Ok, $169 each plus tax"

Me "I need a garantee that you wont scratch or otherwise damage my rims"

NTB "Sry, Sir but we can't garantee that. Wheels get damaged all the time during mount."

Me " What? ... Are you saying that there will be damage?"

NTB "We are carefull but those rims are soft and get scuffed up during the mount"


Is this a prank or a candid camera? Can you immagine your mechanic tell you he will get oil change but he might damage your fender and is not responsible for it because it happens all the time... If I had $250,000 car with $15,000 rims on it - would I get same response from NTB? I can keep on raving, but bottom line is - I'm not paying $850 for possible damage. Did anyone have any problems and if not who did you use?

Unfortunately I think this is sort of a given when having tires installed. They WILL get some scuffs around the outside of the rim, hopefully that's it. Everytime I've ever had tires put on any of the 5 cars I've had they've scuffed up the outer edge some, never anything serious, never anything too noticeable. I've just accepted it. Best thing you can do is try to find a place where the guy mounting your tires cares about cars and talk to him and he'll probably be really careful, that's what I did for my T4R when my rims were painted black, I told him to be careful so I don't have to repaint and he barely even rubbed any paint off.

yup no guarantees when mounting tires. You can usually polish out any scuff marks

apparently, when you bought the truck it had tires and unscuffed rims, so there is a way.

When the factory balance weights are removed there is usually some damage from them also. Generally a tire can be changed with no damage but they are protecting themselfs incase there is damage. NTB, discount tire and those big chain stores are high volume get it in and get it out stores and not the highest quality places to go.

I totally agree!! I havent had the best experience with "the bigger tire stores" but the small shop in town, Stones Country Tire, has the best service you could ask for! Quick story- GF and i were gonna see a Boston vs. Oakland baseball game at 1:05. At 9, walked outside and saw a flat. Switched the flat in ~12mins, got all our stuff and my girl and left for Stone's. Got there(said i was going to an A's game), they immediately plugged the hole, put the original tire on, and put the spare under the truck in under 10 mins. Best part, Travis and Bob(owners) didnt charge me. They would even let me leave a $10 tip for the guys, trust me, i tried!

Stones has switch out mine and my families summer/winter(stud's) tires for the past four years and have never scuffed any of the 3 vehicles wheel's. I know big tire companies are trying to save their a$$ but seriously, do your job correctly!!

Long story short, if you need tires in Truckee, give Stone's Tires a call!! :cheers:

yes, there are ways. When I replaced two of my sport rims, I took it to the local Toyota dealership. I express my concerns about damage to the rims when the tires are mounted...the tech was made aware of my concerns so he placed masking tape all around the rim edge...no scuff marks or damage.

Correct me if im wrong but they have no touch mounting machines where the only thing that touches your rim is where it mounts at the lugs and the tire.

all new cars come without scuffed rims, anyone who tells you we will probably scuff up your wheels should lose his or her business license.

I agree with you guys, there are ways to do this right, but what the manager at NTB was saying is there are no guarantees in life, sh!t happens. They probably wouldn't have scratched your wheels but there is always a possibility.

This conversation would be like asking a pilot to guarantee you wouldn't get in a plane crash while flying somewhere, or a doctor guaranteeing you wouldn't die while having surgery. Just my .02

i will never use NTB again and i have friends there. "they know everything" and the customer is never right.

when i first got the runner i put a leveling kit in. after i took it for an alignment and wheel balance. it was worse then when it went in. i broght it back the next day. my friend was not working so a little "know it all b!tch" basically told me i was wrong and there is nothing wrong. i took her and their "tech" for a ride and showed how bad it was. they tried it again and no luck, no refund or anything. i took it to my toyota dealer and got it back in a few hours. all was perfect. and they even charged less than what NTB charged. i got the spec sheet when it was done and everthing NTB did was in the red so the whole ft end was completely off.

Solution: I call around and ask for this type of machine instead of dinosaur designed in 80's for steel rims.

My experience with NTB has proven them to be dumb ass, big company robots. Use a smaller shop.

Solution: I call around and ask for this type of machine instead of dinosaur designed in 80's for steel rims.

Another solution is to see if they have the Nylon gaurds that fit on the removal/install tool. When I changed tires in the 80's I used a "Coats 40/40" machine that would scuff rims made out of softer compounds.

This is in case you can't find a touchless machine and are in a rush.
