nubie mods questions

hey everybody,
i have been absorbing the tremendous amounts of information on this forum for a few weeks now, and i have finally decided to post a new thread to see what everyones opinion is.

i just bought a 06 titanium metallic SE T4R a couple of weeks ago and I have a few questions.

1) i want to put a black brushguard on my T4R. however, i only wanna spend around $500 on it. I really like the looks and price of the manik one that a few of the people on this site have, but i have also read that it is not very sturdy and tends to shake at higher speeds. i am open to other makers, but from everything i have seen, the manik looks the best in my opinion for my price range.

2) my next purchase would probably be a Gibson exhaust system. I have a V6 and realize that it wont sound like a V8 (which is fine). i just want a deeper, throatier, and "more manly" sounding exhaust than the stock one. again, i am open opinions on other exhaust systems (flowmasters, etc.) also, would an air intake be a good compliment to this? and would the warrenty be affected by either the exhaust or intake?

3) I REALLY like the look of the Yakima megawarrior and think it would be a good touch for the look that I am going for in my T4R. however, I have read on here that it might have a significant effect on my gas milage. I plan on doing a lot of traveling in my 4runner and need as good of gas milage as i can get. can somone with a yakima roofrack (mega or road warrior) give me some numbers in your change of gas milage? also, does the presence of the fairing help/hurt gas?


i realize it may have been more helpful to seperate the mods into different thread, but i want people to understand the "look" i am going for when they state their opinions.

When I had my Thule Playpen on my mileage went down by at least 1 to 1.5 mpg. I took it off and after not using it for a long time I sold it realizing I really didn't need it.

I really don't like the look or idea of bolting something extra onto the front of the truck. While quite a bit more than $500 the ARB replacement bumper would be my first and only choice if I was going to mod the front end.
 
yeah, thats what i was worried about. the thule doesnt come with a fairing though does it? would that make the milage any better/worse?

It came with a fairing and I had it on when I was using it.
 
Another exhaust option is the Magnaflow. I've got it on my truck and it sounds very very nice. Nice and deep when you take off, but not very loud and annoying when you're cruising at a steady clip. You can get it for around the same price as the Stainless Steel version of the Gibson. The Aluminum Gibson is cheaper, but will probably rust through quicker as well.

Anyways welcome to the forums. Sounds like you're already modding the new truck :cool:

a couple of questions for ya sharp4runr.

1)did the Magnaflow affect your warrenty at all?

2) do you have an air intake as well?
 
Black powder coated steel will rust in a couple years, go stainless. Also make sure the exhaust is 304 stainless, Gibson is questionable.

thanks Koz. after spending several more hours researching I think I might go with the Magnaflow. Any opions on how it sounds on a V6? I want it deep and throaty, not rice-burnerish like on a civic.

1) No warranty issue. The dealership would have to prove that the exhaust is at fault for the warranty issue. For example, my front brake caliper locks up and siezes. The dealership can't say because I put the exhaust system, that it is now out of warranty and they won't fix the caliper. Do a search for Magnusson-Moss Act.

2) No air intake, just stock.

The exhaust is nice and deep and you'd be hard pressed to mistake it for a Civic :D
 
I've had a Yakima reciever hitch bike rack (swing away) for years and am very happy with it. We've carried 4 bikes on it to races all over the country from Texas to Utah, Indiana, and South Carolina with no problems. I did have to cut the hitch receiver end of the rack shorter with a hack saw to not hit the spare on the 4Runner, but it still works on all of our vehicles. Just can't pull a trailer with the rack on. Having the rear window that goes down on the 4Runner is really nice with the bikes on, even though the rack can swing away to open the liftgate when needed, even when loaded with bikes. I don't have any gas consumption comparisons since we're always in a hurry to get there or back home and drive considerably faster than normal with the bikes on, but it's usually above 20 mpg with the bikes on even when going 80. The rack's easy to take off when not needed, although it's kind of heavy with all of the steel needed to make it strong enough to swing away when loaded.

I have a 2005 V6 with the Magnaflow....wouldn't trade it for the world. The sound is amazing, but I don't know how much of that sound can be attributed to the larger piping and the side-outlet and stainless tip I had welded on to compliment the muffler.
