NYC-Runner Build Thread

I was finishing off the day at raucshe and on a blue J1 as I went up my tires spun and i got aggressive car went up landed hard I didn't want to keep going so I slammed the brakes not to go into next ditch and boom it happened well thanks any way bro so now the build continues new regear and lockers damm ARB is expensive 875 each plus nitro gears 300 plus etc talking at least 2k let me know if you hear anything thanks

Yeah that's sucks man! My buddy did the same thing doing a petty gnarly hill climb and ended up grenading his rear end like that. Well time to rebuild and by that I mean upgrade haha that's the only good part about braking shit. Yeah Arb's definitely aren't cheap. I would give ECGS a call since there one of the best in the biz and on the east coast. They help you get everything sorted out. Also I don't know how pressed you are for time to get it fixed but since it's November there's probably going to be some great sales coming up towards the end of this month with Black Friday and cyber Monday. Always the best time to make big purchases thru certain vendors and save some good money.

I haven't really been on the forum much lately, been busy and haven't had too much to update.

Literally thought about selling the 4Runner twice to get a solid axle or to build up a 80 series LC. I've fallen in love with that platform and now that I have a DD I can build and have a dedicated wheeler. Not that the 4Runner hasn't been haha, idk I keep going back and forth driving myself crazy! I do really love the 4Runner though but sometimes I think the type of wheeling I'm growing into I need something with a solid axle so I'm not beating the crap or of the ifs but at the same time i still want to be able to go on expo style trips and cover distance etc idk I may just keep building the 4Runner for the time being and we'll see down the road...

We did take a cool trip to northern VT to Jay peak over NYE to go snow boarding! Great trip, they got hit with tons of snow the whole time we were up there so it was perfect conditions and got some great riding in!

The MTr's did great in the deep snow and had now issues driving thru a huge snow storm but the packed down stuff the can get a bit sloppier on.
Here's a few pics.

Just sas the 4runner and be done with it. Allpro even makes a kit.

An 80 would be nice, but I wouldn't want the extra size. SAS the 4Runner, or just keep wheeling the IFS. Honestly, I'd keep the IFS and lock it.

Well sas is going to cost a lot but also think of how much building a 80 is going to cost you in the long run. Sure they have a solid axle and are super roomy and comfy. It's the 4Runners big brother. If I was going to do it. I would sas the Runner for sure. It's lighter, narrower, better gas mileage, and you have already got it built the way you want it.
What about going LT up front?

Sounds like a fun trip. Can't remember the last time I got to go snowboarding was?

Depends how much you value the level of comfort in your 4x4. I had a 4Runner and sold it to build my dream 80. Loved the 80 but sold it cause it was old, gutless, required constant babysitting, and was downright uncomfortable on longer trips. Now I'm in a 4th Gen v8 and think I have the "perfect combo". The 80 was great offroad, and I did love its personality in a nostalgic sorta way. They are easy to work on in the field but they are not cheap to maintain and as they get older more and more smaller parts will need replacing due to age alone - can be a costly project.

Nice V70R! I'd love to get into a new Polestar for my DD.

Yeah I hear you,, that's why I'm at such a crossroads with this because I do love the 4Runner and the way I've built it and it's performed. On the other hand I think as I've done that my wheeling has evolved and more and more I find myself on trails that I have no business being on in a ifs,,,no that's bs I've wheeling thru them all occasionally having to winch here and there and the 4Runner has never let me down but I do find myself sometimes wishing a had more.

When you say gutless you mean lack of power? What year 80 did you have? Thats my only worry when you say it's uncomfortable,, I still want to be able to go on long expo/wheeling trips with it if need be. That's the thing I need to go drive my buddies cause he has a sick 80 completely built and the thing is ridiculous. At least that way I get a feel for it. But I know it's not the 4Runner. At the same time the way I wheel my truck Im always having to replace this or fix that, that comes with the cost of wheeling your rig. I go thru a set of LC's once a year. I thought about getting some dirt kings lowers and uppers but I'm sure I'll still be doing the uni balls every couple years but the LCA's are $1500! Crazy. I don't mind doing the upkeep that kind of comes with the territory of the hobby we do and more or less depending on the level we do it. It's also partly because now I have a DD when before I used to DD and Wheel the 4Runner. So now since I can have a designated trail/wheeling/expo rig I feel like I can have or do more, whereas before I had to keep it more DD friendly.

Thank you,I love this car it's the most comfortable car I've ever had! Not to mention a real sleeper,,, it's fast. I'm about to do a DP,exhaust and stage 2 tune on it come spring but that's it because it's my new DD ;)
Oh man the new polestars are ridiculous,, all the new Volvos are really nice!

So that's the thing I've been looking around just for fun and well because I like to drive myself madd. For instance I could get a nice fully built 80 right now armored, lifted, lockers 5.29s etc for $10k - $15k and I mean properly built no bs. I know how much and how quick money could add up building a 80 or anything for that matter after building the 4Runner. That's why I would buy something already built or pretty close to what I want and then if I wanted to change a couple things here and there it's not a big deal. Let's face it we never get back what we put into our builds unfortunately ( usually) unless you find the right buyer etc but at the same time you can find really good deals on well built up rigs that people have already dumped tons of money into building.

I have to be honest, not saying that I don't love the LT but I've wheeled with a couple people that have 2" LT including one of my good buddies that I wheel with all the time and it's not enough for me to justify the money for LT. don't get me wrong it's sexy as hell and you get more travel but there's never been a scenario where they could wheel something I couldn't or get thru certain things easier or better because of the LT. So for me for the money it costs to go LT doesn't out way the benefits at least from my experience. Especially now after looking at SAS costs, the money you spend on LT your more that half way there. Granted they're different things and have different purposes. Idk that's just my OP I'm sure the 3.5" is a different sorry also.

Anyways,, yeah man it was a awesome trip we had a ton of fun! I definitely need to get out and ride more. These kart couple years I didn't ride much at all.

An 80 would be nice, but I wouldn't want the extra size. SAS the 4Runner, or just keep wheeling the IFS. Honestly, I'd keep the IFS and lock it.

I actually the big body style of the 80 especially when their built up their like tanks! But yes I could see some tight trail situation wheeling here in the northeast.

Thinking about the SAS thing but the more I think a lot of time and even more$$$$

Well the rears already locked, doing the front could definitely help but only in specific situations as i would be cautious with the front axles locked up,, basically only straight when locked.

Just sas the 4runner and be done with it. Allpro even makes a kit. [emoji6]

You have me thinking about it now and I've thought about it in the past. The problem is to do it the way I want to and of course budgeting as much as possible ( which is hard to do on such a big project) I'm still looking at $10k and that's including doing all of the work, which I'll definitely need help from some people much more knowledgeable in this area than myself. So idk not to mention the time.

I say lock the front because since I've done mine I use it all the time. I really didn't think I would use it much, but I too take the 4Runner where I probably shouldn't have it and I end up using it all the time. The whole "wheels straight" thing is a myth. You are never in a wheels straight situation when you end up locking the front. Haha. So far I have been on the trails with broken 80's and 100's but I have yet to break anything. Dented up and lost a window, but nothing broken. Bent up and wore out, but not broken. You'll replace stuff on an 80 on a yearly basis too if you are wheeling it hard. You're not gonna cruise down the interstate in an 80 like you can in your re-geared 4Runner. I go everywhere any of the LC's go, so I don't think you're gonna get a whole lot more trail functionality out of an 80. They look badass, and are a classic but I don't see a whole lot of benefit to changing. On the flip side- 80's are badass and I would pick one up to have alongside the 4Runner if I could.

That might be what I end up doing in the long run. Yeah I never really understood that "wheel straight" thing, I can't remember the last time I ever when over any obstacle when my wheels were completely straight. Yeah I know you guys are all right I think it's just because I love the 80 so I want one haha Maybe I'll just wait and get one when I can...

I was looking at this one over on Mud
https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/1997-lx450-37s-5-29s-marlins-shanes-leather-etc-tulsa.968943/

Very well built!

Which after looking rickashay build it's almost exactly like yours was. Which made me want one even more after looking thru your old build! I did read some good info in your build though, specifically where a guy asked you about going from a 4runner to the 80 which a lot of what you said above.

There was also this one
https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/1996-lz450-fzj80.966054/

I don't much about these engines or the swap but it still looks like a nice build..

I've priced out sas several times over now. You could go custom but have to worry about making sure you line things up right. There's a guy on Instagram that has the allpro sas kit and that thing is a beast! So, here's an idea and price point to start from.
Allpro sas kit-$1700 (get the aluminum links): http://allprooffroad.com/shop/basic-link-and-bracket-kit-05-sas-kit/

Steering kit for the sas-$850 : http://allprooffroad.com/shop/1995-2004-tacoma-sas-steering-kit/

Coilovers are pick your choice. You can order Walker Evan and Fox from allpro in the 12" length. $850 & $980 respectively.

Watch Craigslist and other sites and you can find a set of 1 ton axles for less than $1500 without issue. I've come across some built 1 ton axles several times for $2500-3000 total!

For the transfer case you can either use yours since you can choose 2wd, or you can get a used fj case for fairly cheap. Wrecking yards have them for $350-500, Ebay too.

So, all the above parts are less than $5k. You will need the speedometer thingy from Wyatt at Rock Solid Toys too. You know how to weld and have welding buddies, so cost there is minimal. You'll most likely need to regear axles, unless you get lucky and find some already built. If regearing then replace everything, count on another $1k.
So, expensive, but LT front will cost you that easy before you're done, and then still components that have a hard time handling the stress of offroad life. Invest $6-7 in your more comfortable and reliable 4runner and you'll love it! It's slightly smaller too so it'll be able to squeeze in and over obstacles easier.

Make a poll thread! I've watched this build thread progress (rather quickly) from stock to mild and now you're ready for wild but yes you're right there's no getting any investment back out of it, it's yours to keep after the next step. I vote for keeping the 4runner and SAS as well. Ultimate trail/expo rig and you have a separate daily so no need to worry about build time or trading off some streetability.

That doesn't sound too bad when you lay it all out like that! I was actually looking and I found a F&R Dana 60 and 70 fully re built and re geared to 5.13s and locked both for $1500 But idk if they would work? They Came from a Dodge,, idk if that makes a difference?

Yeah I thought about doing that.. You guys are right it's not worth it especially after building it, why stop now. I'm going to sit on it for a bit and probably go the SAS route down the road when the time is right. Also maybe some day in the future still get a 80 just because I like them so much haha

Yah what I meant by "gutless" was the lack of power. Mine wasn't re-geared but it still was such a beast. I drove mine 18 hours to get to Moab from Canada. My longest trip in the 80 and it wasn't terrible but I know it would be 100000x easier in my 4th Gen. Don't get me wrong... I completely understand your lust for an 80 - they are like the crown jewel of Toyota's and there's just that "Land Cruiser" thing about them that makes them so cool to drive/own. Hard to put a finger on it. But just really look at your specific uses and know if you build one up (properly) yourself its going to be very costly. Especially once you do the baseline maintenance on it and then do your mods.

Maybe look for a stock one with a blown headgasket to pick up "cheap" as a project vehicle and get it pieced together as you have the cash.

I will always miss mine in the back of my head.... but I am REALLY looking forward to some trail time in the 4th Gen. Your build is pretty badass, thanks for all your posts. Definitely gunna steal some ideas.

Thanks for the input and feedback! By the way it didn't help any by going back and looking at your LX build that thing was awesome! I think I'm getting one. Actually I know I know haha I think for me for right now this is the right thing to do with where I'm at in my wheeling. Hopefully it'll be the right decision but either way it will be a fun new adventure and I'm still going to be out in the woods wheeling and exploring! It's not the first truck I'm going to build and I'm sure it's not going to be the last haha.

I look forward to seeing your build with the new 4th gen I know it's going to be a epic if it's anything like your previous builds!

Good luck on whatever you decide .... love that cargo net for sure..

The SAS isn't going to happen at this point. The more I researched it and thought about it it's just too much for me to take on at this point in my life and build. I know it's going to cost more than I want it too ( to do it proper IMO ) not to mention the amount of man hours that you would need to put into it! It's just not the right time. If I would of known I was going this direction I def would have done it from the jump but that's part of the fun in learning is the journey along the way.
