O2 Sensor Job - Difficult?

Have any of you replaced Oxygen Sensors yourself?

Difficult to do?

I imagine it's all about how rusted things are down there...but other than that, straight forward?

Special tools needed of any kind?

The shop wants $300...ugh.

or i'm guessing that is w/ the sensor. sensor retails for around $200 depending on the year of your vehicle, so they are probably charging you an hour labor. its easy to do yourself, and you can find the sensor cheaper at some of the online vendors as well. just depends how motivated you are to save a few $$'s

I'd save yourself a lot of money and tackle it yourself. Even with rust. If you soak the bolts a doy or 2 on advance with come penetrating oil you sould be ok. Even the more expensive A/F sensor can be had for about 150.

I did the O2 sensor on my '97 Limited. I was worried about the rust too but there was hardly any.

I followed the same write-up instruction and I'd say the most difficult part of the whole job was just getting my hands in there to undo the wiring harness.

I paid $80 for my sensor and did the job in about 45 minutes in my driveway.

O2 jobs are not hard, just get underneath the truck. The hot A/F sensor has 2 12mm bolts and a clip and it's off! a 5 min job even for a weekend warrior. Take it to a service station if you want the work warranteed, otherwise do it yourself is the way to go!

I have done both front and rear on mine. Two tips: 1) Buy the nuts--at the stealer if you have to. You will be happy you did. 2) Check these guys for sensors:URD USA

If you have the two -cat Cali. system, the write-ups I have seen don't apply in one respect. You need to unbolt the sensor FIRST, pass it over the pipe, THEN unplug the harness.

Just took my 2001 4runner in to check engine light on and they wanted $490.00 to change my up stream and down stream 02 sensor !!! How can I buy myself and do it my self ??

I went aftermarket on mine. Took 20 minutes taking my time. Sprayed PB blaster on two days and day before. Had no trouble. Hardest part is finagling the harness to plug it in.
Spent about $70 on sensor. Reset computer by unplugging negative battery terminal.

I've been about 4 months with no problems and no CEL on my daily driver.

(probably from my 15 year old exhaust system and not the sensors...but can't go wrong) Getting ready for winter maintenance, headers, cat, new muffler...

EDIT: You probably only need the upstream A/F sensor: 234-9002

I used the same parts. P0420 went away, and has only popped back up one time, and that was before I changed the plugs that had 210k miles on them.

You can do the job yourself, but don't skip on a cheap sensor. Spend the money now rather than later.

Changing the sensors is a piece of cake. I highly recommend you plan ahead and get four (4) new nuts from the dealer (part #90179-08059) That part number is for the 3.4L LTD (non-California)

TIPS: Make sure the rig is cold when you do this. I do mine first thing in the morning. Also, no need for a jack.

Disconnect your battery (always good when working with or replacing sensors) It also resets the ECU and will help "learn" the new sensors.

My 2000 T4R 4WD LTD has the SAME SENSOR fore and aft. (Denso Part #: Denso 234-4162)

I buy the Denso (Part # 234-4162) 02 sensors from Amazon. (As of Christmas Day 2015 - they cost $47.81 on Amazon.com)

I use electronic cleaner spray to clean off the connectors real well before connecting up the new sensors.
