Recently I bought cables to connect my '94 4runner's computer to my lap top. One cable would be an ELM 327 Interface Firmware Revision 1.4 OBD-2 . The other is an 17 pin OBD-1 adapter extention to fit this 16 pin OBD-2 cable to the DLC-1 ports in my vehicle. I have loaded the software that came with the ELM Interface, but it returns an error message stating that the COM port could not be opened. Should I search for other software or is it just a setting in my computer that needs changing?

sounds like a computer issue i know my Microtech on my track car had the same issues and i ended up having to buy a old laptop that still had windows 98 installed.
good thing is a old computer is cheap but i would use the 16 pin com port.

you could try switching ports on your computer i dont know how your computer is set up but mine i use the device manager to select ports. do some searching on the web for com ports. or microtech has some good walkthroughs for there software it might point you in the right direction.

Work

Thanks for a reply. That reads like a lot of work. So far I am getting by on the paper clip method. I switched ports, but that didn't work. I only have two ports on the laptop. It may just be the baud rate which I am going to change the next time I hook up.

It's a com port issue in Windows. Likely the cable is USB, and the software is looking for it as a serial port, which the USB should be emulating. When this happens, it's usually that the software is looking for COM1 or COM2, and the cable is sitting as COM4 or COM5. You can change which COM port it is from the device manager in windows with the cable connected.

Have to get ready for work, but Google should be able to find you a walkthrough.

Thanks for that answer, Dingman. I'll try to work on it, but first I am going to copy your post and print it out.
