OBD2 Scan on a '96 4Runner?

Hey guys,

Great Forum - tons of info here.

I just bought a '96 4Runner Limited with 210,000km, and the engine light is on but the 3.4 runs smooth. I take ownership of the vehicle this coming week, and wondering what scanner will be compatible.

I read another thread that said Canada enacted OBD2 in 1998, so do I just buy the OBD1 scanner?

Thx

thanks troy,

I think I'll go with the usb connection just to save me any troubles with pairing devices. That's pretty cheap, that will fit the bill perfectly.

I like the idea of seeing the codes for myself instead of at a dealership. Always feels like someone is spinning the wheel on The Price Is Right when they hook up their own machine to your vehicle.

Love this forum, especially the Documentation and DIY section. I think I'll change the oil, spark plugs, and beefier rotors and calipers to get started.

thx again.

I would suggest you look for the OBDII interface plug about a foot in front of the driver's right knee. It points down, so it is not obvious if you don't know what you are looking for.

That said, I would be surprised if any 3.4L were put in 4Runners in North America with OBDI even if it were not required in Canada. OBDI T-100's with the V6 (and an EGR emissions system) were sold here pre-1996.
