odd cut in rear window

was cleaning the windows today and found this

its hard to get a photo of with my phone but its the best i could do. i have a cut in a nice line starting to form on the rear window. i think its from a bolt or something in the hatch touching the rear window when i roll it up and down. the cut is a few inches long and there is a line that goes further down. has anyone seen this before. also how much is a rear window?

Yeah, i think it must be rubbing on something. Better check it out before you replace the glass, Safelite replaced mine fore about $380.00
 
Make sure the inside door panel on the rear hatch is seated right on the pinch weld on the window sill. The door panel helps keep the window away from the pinch weld and I believe there are some clips in there that could do this as well. I scratched my window about 5 years ago when I was installing a rear view camera. Hopefully, I only scratched the tint and not the window but I have never fixed it. Can't really see it from the outside or driver seat so it doesn't bug me that much.

How long are the license plate screws? I remember someone a while back mentioning that they had put bolts in the license plate holes and they were so long they actually interfered with window travel.

its an inch left of where that would be
 
Mine has this same cut in the glass. I haven't had a chance to pull the inside panel off yet to further investigate.
 
You would have to use some seriously long bolts on your license plate for it to rub. My money would also be on a rock or something in the scraper. The back windows on these things are super soft. I used my rear wiper once in the snow then never again because just the stuff they put on the roads scratched it from it sweeping across.
 
I had a real nice scratch form in mine, deep enough that you could catch your fingernail in. Took it to my local stealership to have it checked since it had a certified warranty. They determined the previous owner had the rear wiper iced over and then they tried to turn it on. Since the blade could not move, the wiper motor bracket bent moving part of the motor to close to the window. Not sure if you would have had any icing problems in Richmond.

It was tagged as Richmond, VA in a December 9, 2013 AP story. I think it looks more like NOVA because the City of Richmond doesn't do traffic lights like that. It pretty much matches my memory of last winter though. I just googled for an image of an ice storm in Richmond.

Before buying my 4th gen used I looked around the 'net for common problems. It seems that the rear hatches have a tendency to rust from the inside out and the electronic rear lock malfunctions a lot. It's probably a good idea to open up the hatch occasionally to see what's up. I haven't done it yet.
