My speedometer and odometer are both off because the 33 inch tires that i have. What is the cheapest way to correct the problem. I keep finding myself hauling a__ and wasting gas.

You're going to have to go to a shop and have them reprogram or calibrate or whatever your speedometer. I honestly don't know all of what they do, and I still haven't had mine done after 2 years after also going up to 33" tires. I probably should, especially when I pass those speed checkers on the road and it reads 38MPH and my speedometer and Ultraguage are both around 35/36MPH. It gets worse the faster you go, last year heading over to Montana, I kept thinking my dad was going slow doing 65-68MPH on I-90 (pretty much desert in Eastern WA), when really I was on his tail reaching doing actually up to 75 or so at times.

The speedometer can possibly be reprogrammed bht not the odometer.
Altering the odometer in any way is for sure a violation of state law and most likely federal law as well.

That's not true. When the speedometer is calibrated, the odometer will be. Right now his is off because of the tires. If someone regears they'll be off too. Neither are illegal. When the odometer and speedometer work off the same thing, when you correct the speedometer the odometer will become accurate too.

I really don't know the technical details here but i still believe I am correct that modifying the odometer is not legal.
Can you explain how this would work?
Do you personally know of it being done before on a 3rd gen 4Runner by a legitimate state registered mechanic?

Just to be clear, I didnt say that having a speedometer / odometer that is OFF is illegal just that modifying (rolling back / correcting) the odometer is always illegal.

I have heard but not confirmed that it is only illegal if the car is less than 10 years old and only if it is done with the intent of misleading someone to the actual mileage of the car. But I do know that if you are changing the mileage on a replacement instrument panel to accurately show the actual mileage, it is perfectly legal and is usually accompanied by a sticker that will state the date and mileage in which the new unit was installed in the vehicle.
But in this situation, he would be wanting to add miles since he has actually gone farther than what the Odo reads.

I'm not suggesting he roll the the miles back or up, just that he recalibrate it. I've never done it on a 3rd Gen but I have on other cars. On previous cars that used a mechanical odometer and a speedo cable it was just a matter of changing the speedometer gear. (I had to do it when I went to 4.10's from 3.08's in my Mustang.
In new cars that operate off of a vehicle speed sensor to run the speedo and odometer I think it's just a matter of reprograming it. But I've never done it that way so I'm not sure. But I can guarantee you that it's not illegal to make your speedo and odometer accurate.

I agree with everything you are saying here and with the previous poster that as long as you indicate the odometer has been altered when selling the truck, no crime has occurred.
Modifying the speedometer requires no paperwork to my knowledge.

I'm resurfacing this thread.. My 35s and 4.88s have put my speedometer off anywhere from 4-6mph off. I'd love to fix this but haven't found any specific programmers for my '99. I'd love to get a HyperTech or similar but have had no such luck finding one compatible. Is there a good speedometer calibrator out there for our trucks?
