Odyssey Group 34 - Whats been your experience?

So, my battery is less than a year old. I installed it last March, haven't had the upped voltage to properly charge the battery but will be installing it. Recently though the battery is not holding a charge and I need to boost my 4runner now regularly. I haven't installed anymore electrical accessories so I don't have a parasitic draw.

I'm hoping that I can bring the battery back to life and I will be increasing the voltage the alternator puts out as soon as I get back to the truck. Anyone have similar experience and were able to bring the battery back or should I get another one?

First i would try to get a good deep charge on that battery via a wall charger (AC to DC). Don't use the alternator to bring this one back to life, even after you add the diode booster unit to it. If it never comes back to life enough for you to feel comfortable, i would then put in a new battery, and then make sure you have the diode booster unit from the start of having the new one installed. I would also install some sort of bluetooth battery monitor so you can track the voltage trends, etc. on the battery over time.

Is there a bluetooth monitor you use or recommend?

Nice rig. Did you chop body mounts to fit the ray10s and 285s?

I actually use the same bluetooth monitor that e60 mentioned earlier. (Automotive BM2 Wireless Car Battery Tester 12V Battery Load Tester Bluetooth 4.0 Battery Voltage, Charging and Cranking System Monitor Digital Battery Analyzer for Android & IOS)

It's a super simple thing, but i like to be able to see the trends of my battery over time and i can most of the time tell what i had on or was messing with at the time by just looking at the app in most cases by the voltage drops, etc. It's so simple i was hesitant, but i really like it, other than the program runs in your phones background and can put a slight drain on it if you want updates, percentage alarms, etc. immediately. With that said i run the 34 with the diode booster and it works awesome. I think you will like the booster, 34, and the bluetooth battery monitor. Seems to do the trick for me anyway.

About the Ray 10's and 285's i actually had to just shave part of my body mounts. It wasnt a full chop by any means. I am running JBA UCA's and read where some people had to do a full chop of theirs which i would have done, but just didnt need to since i am going no bigger than 285/70's. I love em though, so it was worth it to me to just do a small modification.

Got the battery to come back to life and did the GM diode fuse swap. Charges at 14.9 to 14.6 volts. Will see when I get back in a couple weeks if it holds charge but so far it seems to be back as good as it was. I used a trickle charger with auto features over a few days to get it up to the 12.8V charge. I don't have a load tester but had to winch myself out of some deep snow and it held up to that so should be good.
 
Guys this is a common thing on different manufacturers vehicles not just toyota. GM fixed it by just installing one of these cheap $3 diode fuses in the fuse box. It raised my voltage .5 volts which is all we need to make the difference. No sense spending $50 or $100 for a $3 fix

We don't need a lot more amps we just need slightly higher voltage, most people don't understand how electricity works or batterys. The voltage just needs to be slightly higher not the amps.

Here is a link on amazon for 2 of these for $6 if you get a battery light when you turn the car on you just installed it backwards, turn it off and turn the diode around in the fuse holder and your good to go

In the market for a 34R-PC1500T. Original OEM battery is starting to turn slow in the cold (2014)

So...yes? Pull the trigger? :)


I don't want to have to keep topping it off every other month. Change my mind.

I run the group 34 with an aftermarket 700watt stereo amp and a dometic cfx50 that has run 24-7 for at least 6 months now. I do use the voltage booster. With the booster i have never had to top off the battery. Be sure to get the spacer and booster. You wont have any problems.

Voltage booster= the diode for the fuse box that is decribed in the post just above your original post in this thread.

The odyssey batteries recommended charge voltage is 14.5 volts and the diode will get the charging voltage on you 4runner up very near that. Stock charging voltage is typically below 14 volts. Less than optimal for an odyssey battery.

You need to boost voltage to 15 volts. Arc light makes a plug and play part that will do this.
 
Just to update my battery was replaced under warranty because it wouldn't maintain a charge. I don't think these batteries fail often but like anything it can happen.

Two simple questions that I'm sure are easy. Is the diode that is linked above good for a 2014 4runner? Where in the fuse box does it go?

Like I said I'm sure these are simple answers but I'll just say I have zero knowledge about this stuff.

Its good for your year model. It comes with instructions for install. I didnt use that particular one as the only option i knew of at the time was the HKB diode from Australia. I have had no issues.

Someone beat me to the answer already with a nice picture showing where it goes, To be sure you can just look at the diagram on the fuse box cover.

If when you turn the vehicle on the first time you see the ALT or Battery light flashing on the dash just means you have it plugged in backwards. Turn car off and flip it around and your good to go.

Been using the cheap GM $3 diode fuse for a year now with two Odysee batteries without issue. And I have lots of stuff hooked up to them and my batteries are always showing over 14v on the meter
