OEM Audio + 5th Gen 4Runner audio system

the lift gate, front tweeters, and door speakers should take you about 1 hour to an hour and a half.
Ordered my system today...
After a crazy couple months that resulted in my selling my 2003 4 runner (mistake)
Buying a 2016, and buying a killer system... but then selling the 2016 due to a company change... thinking I was getting a company car.
Then, that got pulled so I ended up in a 2017 today (crazy 72 hours).
But this OEM solution makes a ton of sense, and having pulled apart a 4 runner before I don't think the install should take me more than about 4 hours to do it right.
Seems really well thought out (though I would have put the sub in the cubby on the rear right side (though that would mean pulling a panel). But the harness, and custom sub box, along with the quick connects already being on there - very smart.
Even the little thing of suspending the amp below the seat makes a ton of sense.
Looking forward to it myself.

So, in about 1 1/2 hours, got the tweeters in and the rear door and lift gate speakers. I am doing it a little out of order trying to get done as much as I can before I commit to the wiring.
it already sounds better! Especially the tweeters ... had to then the treble down ... what a difference.
I love the video's use of "using gentle force" ... LOL
I partially broke one of the plastic clips but salvaged it ... several stayed in the door and there were a PITA to get out. Took 45 mins to do first door, 10 mins to do the second one. Lift-gate took about 15 mins or so.
Not sure when I'll tackle the rest ... maybe tomorrow, likely Saturday. But, so far so good.
And Toyota should be ashamed at those POS stock speakers.

OK, so 8 hours, it's in and working minus the 6x9's of course.
First, the good.
System system sounds great! I don't know all the technical terms, but even without the new 6x9's there is just enough bass to feel it without being over powering. Some people may want more, I suspect ... but this works great for me. I have additional volume, all the sounds are clearer and crisper, just all around a better audio experience.
Next, the bad.
First things first, I know this is a new system, so I am not angry. At all. It's all part of the adventure. But, here are a few observations:
1) The running of the harness in the channel above the glove box ... nat happening. There is no channel in my 4runner. There is NO WAY short of an act of God you're snaking anything through there. Period. I called OEM and spoke to Daniel ... sent him pictures ... he agreed this was a configuration they had not seen. I have a '16 TEP .... nothing special.
2) I was able to devise my own route for the harness, just below the glove box, up diagonally inside the dash to the head unit. Had sufficient slack. Problem solved ... and honestly, that may be an easier route even for those with a "clear channel" above the glove box. My channel is packed full of wires and stuff.
3) Powered it up ... no sound. And, the volume control on the head unit didn't display the volume bars. Thought I fried the head unit. Called Daniel again. Turns out that the wire in pin 8 of the 10 pin connector belongs in pin 9. Manufacturing defect and QA failure.
Now, the GREAT.
Daniel is my new hero. He walked me through troubleshooting and I first realized I had idiotically hooked the power up wrong ... we were like "Yes, that's it!" ... but, alas - no dice. That part was on me, of course.
I pulled the seat checked the connection to the Amp. They were good. Then, pulled the head unit again ... gosh that bottom bezel for the climate controls is a real PITA. Twice. LOL.
I texted him pics of the connectors, and he noticed the incorrect pin out ... and walked me through moving the pin.
Daniel was a real champ, after hours ... and I had been at it for a long time, in ridiculous heat. I am so sweaty I will have to burn my clothes. I was in a poor mood, frustrated ... and he never wavered. The epitome of spectacular customer service.
Can't wait for the 6x9's ... time to take a shower. So, if you do an install, look at the 10 pin connector on their harness head on, locking tab on top, the blue wire should be right next to the orange wire in pin 9 and not 8 where mine was.
Two casualties ... the little funny black plastic "nut" that screws in the back of the passenger side kick panel ... lost it ... somehow. I guess I can replace it with a nut and washer if I can guess the size. Also dropped a little screwdrive into the dash while changing the pin ... doesn't seem to rattle but hopefully it finds it's way out some day.

Thats odd... I have a 2016 TEP as well... it is a tight run up through the glove box but it was easily done. I had to tie a wire hanger through and pull the harness through. Wonder if yours is different for some reason.

Thanks for the update. Have any finished install pics that you'd like to share? I know that we have seen them before, but it's always nice seeing the results of all your hard labor.

i go out my fishing rod that i use for pulling wires. got it there, pulled it down, and use that to pull the bundle up.
I simply put my drop light on the floor pointing up and then look down through the head unit cavity at the bright spots there's several very clear Pat's where it was very easy to snake the wiring harness up. Instead of running the wire initially up alongside the glove box it runs down underneath the glove box and then almost straight up to the head unit.

Glad you were able to get it installed, even found an alternate way to fish the wires through! My hands were scraped up and bloody trying to fish them through that part.
I emailed Daniel (Brand Manager) for my weekly status update on the 6x9's. Got a different response this week. He said he is waiting on a response from their system integration team. SO maybe they will ship them soon.
