Although I can't compare the OEM Audio system, I'd suggest "Shadow on the Sun" by Audioslave and the acoustic version of "Blow up the outside World " by Soundgarden. I feel like they both really help me set up my front stage imaging and help me pinpoint any deficiency in it. They both seem to highlight the human voice especially at the end of each verse. Just an idea for a baseline for comparison sake. Hope it helps you.

Not Muddy, perhaps a bit bass-heavy but not bad or over the top (I feel a little sound wave massage in my left shin now at times). I keep the HU EQ flat because is mine there is no reason to tweak it. The highs are sparkly and fine with the new tweat and getting a little imaging even from the better coax in the rears. If I want more or less bass, can easily dial it in with the dedicated sub gain control knob.

COuld yours have something to do with the retro fit if I am remembering correctly you moved yours from one rig to another right?

I hope you get it dialed in to your liking.

P.S. - As for songs to test it, I just try to listen to a variety of songs (different genres whether to my liking and not) and from a variety of sources (Radio, USB, XM, CD, etc.) taking into account the virtues and limitations of each source and genre. For instance I really like Lithium 33 on XM but as previously talked about it's highly compressed... still sounds way better then stock. I listen to Hawks game Saturday on FM talk to make sure voice radio wasn't obnoxious, I took usb key out of wife's car with NOW! pop music that my kids like to listen to in order to test wide variety of treble/bass pop music from 320kbps rips and finally for the best most pristine, I listened to my remastered TOTD, Stone Temple Pilots, U2, Nirvana etc. all of which are more my style. I wasn't just one song or a best song, it's all of this over past two days and very few things were disagreeable (mostly R&B/Hiphop/Dance type of stuff That's I'll never listen to anyway... no offense to those who like that stuff).

Get the gain control knob and 2nd dedicated amp... I can't rave enough but the sound quality with the full package.

Only thing on mine that needs addressing is fairly loud "Pop" from sub when ignition off (or more specifically when amp is turned off). I haven't had time to troubleshoot yet but reported it to Daniel at OEA+ and his response made it seem as if it wasn't something he hears regularly from customers with the second dedicated sub amp. I believe the POP noise is louder when the gain control knob is max vs. min. Daniel is reportedly bringing the "artifact" as he calls it to his team and having someone get back to me. I really hope I am not relegated to removing that tricky under-seat amp rack... can't tell you how much I did not enjoy rigging an extension u-joint socket while propping the rack up to the right angle lining up the bolt's path... argh.

I remember old school car stereos doing this when the amp went on or off but thought that was a phenomenon that went out decades ago.

Anyway, am curious if you hear this as well on yours since sounds like you have identical solution to me.

Nothing about this is worse than stock. In the old days when I used to build sub boxes out of particle board and put aftermarket car stereo systems in my rides and for my friends, if they like mostly rock I would do it different than if they like Bass heavy rap or Hip Hop or Techno droning bass Dance trance stuff.

For my type of music (rock or alt rock) or the Pop stuff my wife & kids like, you will do ok with smaller drivers or subs that deliver a tighter punchier bass kick. For those other types of music with lower drum machine/synth or sustained bass lines, You are never going to get an "awesome" or ideal result with such small underpowered drivers. You would want multiple 10 (at smallest) or 12" subs and better amps/ great crossovers) to deliver power at directed frequencies between the speakers.

So for the music I like, OEA+ setup is really close to ideal in a 4runner as it is designed to be "reference audio" setup for the range suited and present in that type of music I like. If you primarily listen to that other types of music, I could see then how you would be underwhelmed with OEA+ ability to deliver on those sustained lows and really isolated frequency ranges. Your $2000 might be better spent at Crutchfield. THIS IS REALLY AN OPINION OF LESS THAN AN EXPERT, but some objective stuff in here for anyone who has designed and installed aftermarket systems before. And I do have appreciation for those types of music , just not my favorite (I even used to roll with Sir MixaLot way back in the day!)

Oh - BTW I like The Roots (i.e. Phrenology) very much and it sounds good as does Linkin Park with JayZ in the Hybrid Theory Album, just not going to shake the block or anything.

I was going to try to meet up with Daniel for an install by him himself if I did the oem system the second time around so he could get it dialed in for me as well as the system could be dialed in. Also I might get a little discount for being a second time buyer so might be worth it.

I listen to hip hop, rap, country, rock, trap, dubstep, House, and just about every other type of genre out there and I haven’t noticed any issues between the genres. I leave my gain control knob at around 40% and I will only increase for edm music. It’s something I have played with for the last 3 months or so and I’m fixated on the 40% (98% of the time I listen to music) and turn the bass up on the equalizer to between +2 or +4. It gets more bass out of the 6x9’s and doesn’t have an impact on the quality being produced by the sub. I’ve stated it a few times, if you are looking to annoy your neighbors and rattle your car apart then this system isn’t for you. If you are looking for a quality sound with good highs and lows that doesn’t require taking up your trunk space and drilling into your vehicle, then go with this system and you won’t be disappointed. I was in your situation earlier this year and I can’t tell you how happy I am that I made the decision to go with oem+.

Is it just the JBL package subwoofer from oem audio plus? I have the Reference 500Q package for non JBL. It would just daisy chain to that amp?

I think they have a solution that will run all speakers and sub off a single DSP amp but the one he bought and that I bought has a second dedicated amp that mounts under the first amp on the same bracket which sits under the passenger seat and sends a cable to the cargo hatch area where a custom designed OEA+ sub enclosure melds into the driver side wheel well area and matches the interior fairly well.

So OEM Audio sent me a pair of original 6x9s and 450q amp specific to 4runner to assess and compare to my conversion. Gonna try the speaker swap first then try the amp. Fingers crossed this fixes my issue of chasing the right EQ.

Does the OEM speaker/amp system work well with an aftermarket head unit? Thinking about going with it and then at some point upgrading to get Apple CarPlay.

So I tried the loaner amp today. Remember my original was a conversion from my Tacoma which they were kind enough to program to the T4R. For some reason the eq was off or was not able to be adjusted with the conversion which really threw off the 6x9 speakers and sub. The T4R specific amp they loaned me completely changed things. The music was punchy and articulate and sounded just like it did in the Tacoma. Waiting for feedback from Daniel on this, but the dedication to fix this issue for me was well beyond what I would have expected.

Does your amp happen to cause the sub to make a popping sound when it shuts off? Mine does, Daniel is working on it but probably will mean a new amp in the mail for me too and a fun repeat of my visit with the underside of my passenger seat.
