OEM running board install

Someone was kind enough to give me their OEM running boards when they upgraded to aftermarket.


I intend to install them on my wife's 2017 SR5 Premium.


Looks like you just pull the 12 mm bolts out that are already in the frame, and use them to bolt up the running boards.


Is it really that simple? No other hardware required? Use the existing hardware?

Pretty much. My Predator steps came with hardware that was a socket size up. The original bolts may have worked. Not sure about length. I used the larger size that came with the steps. If needed I’m sure your parts guy could hook you up or even a trip to Home Depot?? Super easy install though. Good luck!

Looks like it should use some different bolts which I don’t think I got. Is there a separate part number for this hardware?

Edit: I did just catch something. I thought I read elsewhere that the later models (post 2014 maybe) don't have existing brackets? I didn't see anything other than a half dozen 12mm bolts when I looked under the car yesterday. Are there updated instructions that would be applicable to the 2017?

Yes, 6-12mm bolts for mounting, that is 6 for the bracket to the frame, and 6 for the bracket to the running board. I just went out and took this pic. Of a couple of the bolts. These are to the frame.

Ok perfect - and via your signature we have the exact same truck.

So - pull the OEM 12 bolts. Wife holds up the running board. Bolt them on using the OEM hardware. Torque. Drink beer. Thank posters.

So they gave him the boards as they came from the parts dept. We installed them at my house that evening.

They came with new bolts. Installed in about an hour.

I threw OEM's on my 17 Off Road. If I'm not mistaken, the OEM bolts are 12mm and the ones that come with the boards were 13mm. But as you said, lift up, screw in, torque. Having an extra person is better than leveraging it on your chest if you're by yourself.

Yeah the oem boards are not very heavy, hold it up, start in the middle, just get one started then your good to go.

We put in the new ones that came in the box. Don't recall if different.

I think mine were a size up. Maybe from 12 millimeter to 13. If the holes in the board’s bracket are too big for the 12 millimeter hardware, get some 13 millimeter. I don’t think the length will be an issue. I bet the original will work. Give it a shot and see. You aren’t out much time or money either way. Good luck.

Bolted right up tonight after a few oil changes!

No issues with the OEM bolts and glad you guys told me to have someone hold them. Was gonna do it in a friend's driveway when I picked them up out of state last weekend, was much nicer having my wife hold them in the comfort of my own garage tonight.

Did have to take off the little flap in front of the rear wheel as there is already one on the running boards.

Really love this car so far, and am really glad I talked her into this as opposed to a Pathfinder, Explorer, or all the other ***** FWD SUVs she was looking at. Just wish it was mine, makes my cars suck in comparison. Great race vehicle for bicycle races when I'm fortunate enough to "borrow" it!

5th generation running board install

I have a 2012 sr5 and bought what I assume is the limited running board. The brackets are too short. I'm considering welding a steel spacer to add length or replacing the rocker panel with a smaller one. Not looking to spend a bunch of money, any recommendations?

good question, I am looking at buying a 2012 and would like running boards ( snow and mud off black body) and a guy is selling a set off a 2015. Aftermarket shows that all years fit...but not sure about factory fitting different years.

Waiting on bank to see if I can finance.

2021 Limited running boards

Just bought this midnight black 4runner a month ago. Quickly found out my 79-year-old mother-in-law can't get in very well. Looking for suggestions on brands to consider. Obviously, a good grip when wet is important, but I don't want to lose too much clearance at the same time. Anyone have any "definitely don't buy" brands?

This thread was very helpful! My ‘23 XP series came with running boards, and I hated them. I’m 6’3” and all legs, so the step was purely in the way. However my MIL is tiny, so this morning I dismounted mine and installed them on her ‘21 TRD. We are both happy with the result! Yeah I’m a little jealous hers is 4WD…
