Just got home from a fun day at Timmys. Had had a great time with lots of really cool people and their trucks with sick mods. It is hard to believe that people came from as far as Yreka and LA to be there, but I can understand why. One of my goals for these parties is to not get too wrapped up in a repair or mod so I could have time to walk around, talk to people, and see all the cool rigs and modifications they've done. We got Wei's transmission filter job done pretty quick and Jax's rear springs and shocks done pretty quick as well. Then Chris shows up with a destroyed passenger side rear axle bearing and I knew this wasn't going to be a quick fix. The first hurdle was getting the brake drum off and I can't say for sure if emergency repair team messed up or not but big hammers and pry bars came out the drum gets destroyed in the process along with some of the brake hardware.
I had an extra axle but not the needed brake hardware. So we send Chris off with his friend to a local PickNPull and he luckily grabs a complete passenger side axle with the brake drum and hardware. The brake backing plate is really bent so we'll have to swap over the one on his original axle. I told him we may as well do the job right so I sent him to Toyota to get a new axle seal, new bearing, new dust seal, new o-ring and new retaining clip. Since we pull the parts off, we're able to reuse the ABS tone rings and retainers.
Long story short, we get everything pressed onto the used axle and he just uses the brake shoes and hardware that was on the used axle. After a few rounds of bleeding the brakes, the brake pedal still feels a little soft and we attributed it to the passenger side shoes not being adjusted enough. We pulled the parking brake over and over again to try to get the self-adjuster to tighten it up a bit more but the end result was brakes that were working, but pedal travel was a little more than normal. Hopefully Chris sees this post because I'd like to hear he made it back to Auburn safely.
Safe to say, Chris needs to buy new brake shoes and most likely either resurface the drums or replace them. And, that driver side axle seal is probably not too far behind from failing so another axle seal job is going to be needed as well. The inside of the axle housing got some good gouges in it but it's not going to affect anything. His ABS sensor got cheese grated too and that's another thing he'll have to replace.
It's not too common a rear axle bearing implodes the way Chris' did. My theory is his rear axle seal was leaking for a long time. When gear oil surrounds the bearing, it gets inside and slowly washes out the grease. Bearings need grease for proper lubrication, not gear oil. So with a compromised bearing, he gets into a long drive from Auburn to San Jose. The bearing finally overheats and it's Game Over Man.
In usual party fashion, there were fewer people in attendance than expected but that's always the case. However, this was our best showing ever and there were some really sweet rigs parked at my place. Sean will put together a party video for Y'all to check out.
Anyway, it's always lots of work throwing these parties but I like this T4R community we've got so I reckon we'll keep doing it. We will throw another one before the end of the year, most likely in the Fall. Peace out!

Tim you came through in the clutch HUGE for Chris and should receive MUCH good Karma coming your way my friend.... The hours and sweat you yourself put into the assist was amazing as always. But do let it be said for the benefit of those that weren't there; you were not on deck at the moment the drum was destroyed coming off... That was a sound we all heard while standing out in the driveway when you were taking a breather. That element should not be confused with your stellar work and commitment to help rescue a would be stranded 4Runner far from home... Outstanding once again Tim thanks for being the amazing host that you are. Allison too for putting up with all of us lol...

Timmy, you are the MAN. I've seen shop's that aren't even as well prep'd as your garage is.
As for the drum, Poor Chris and his bud was trying to get the drum off. It ended up binding, and the removal bolts cracked the drum. :-( At that point, I started tinkering with it and prying a bit. That's when the spring for the rear brake shoe dropped out. I then knew why the drum was binding. There was no way of getting things apart without either destroying the drum or backing plate, and the brake hardware. Since the drum was already cracked, that was a simple decision. I guess the luck part, is parts for the 3rd gens are everywhere still!
Tim, I've NEVER seen someone do an axle as quick and easy as you made it look. Great job man! Glad Chris and buds made it back home!

Pismo Beach Wheeling Weekend June 22-24
Hey Dudes,
Instead of trying to remember everyone to invite, I figured I'd just post it here. A bunch of SoCal 3rd Gen enthusiasts are going to be in Pismo Beach Friday June 22nd through Sunday June 24th for some wheeling, camping, BBQing and Drinking and I figured some of us could show up and represent NorCal.
The plan is to drive down Friday, camp Friday and Saturday nights and leave sometime Sunday back home. We could all camp in the same general area, do some fun wheeling followed by BBQing, Drinking and whatever else we can think of.
Let me know if you're interested.
