In salty areas they all have corrosion spiders under the clearcoat so I had to sandblast that off. And use aircraft stripper to get rid of the remaining clearcoat.

Finally did it.

Me and my 11 year old son did this yesterday. I must say he is actually very talented and did most of the taping and painting of the wheels.

I used Rustoleum soft flat iron, I think it looks good against the black paint. Got my helper peeking out of the window.

I just got my 2019 T4R and don't like the all silver wheels too much I'm thinking of painting inside of the outlined areas black. Not sure how they'll look. I don't want to do the Plasti-Dip thing. Just too much work doing everything twice. I'm thinking gloss black. Thoughts? Thanks.

Experimental paint job on a brand new T4R would make me nervous. Why not sale those and get something you like? I think it be hard to get clean lines but maybe you're a better painter than me. If you do it I'd like to see how they turn out.

Right now I just can't afford new rims. We just bought two new vehicles and funds are a bit tight. Plus I like modifying stuff on my own. A friend who is really good at photoshop is playing around with some pics to see if anything strikes me. I will post pics for sure when I do paint them.

OK I think this one is it. Real close to it anyway. I think gloss would be nicer than matte.

Finished painting mine. Rustoleum self-etching primer, Duplicolor graphite + Duplicolor wheel clear coat gloss. If I could do it again, I would do a better job masking. I expect to be able to clean the overspray off the tires but there was a lot more than I expected from the Duplicolor. I had a few bad runs from putting thick coats of paint on right after each other and putting the clear coat on too soon as well. overall I'm happy with the look and will know how to paint with a rattlecan better next time.

Rim Restoration

Seems many of you have chosen to "paint" your old rims instead of trying to restore them to their original state..., if that is even possible. After about 22 some years I am about to repaint my Toy 4RNR Limited w 178K originals on it.

But what should I do about those flaking clear coat once beautiful rims? Can they be blasted, re-polished? Can I ever get back that look, appearance of new?

You can blast off the corrosion. But it's hard to blast the clearcoat so first get some aircraft paint stripper to take it off, it just peels it right up. Makes a mess. After all this you could theoretically buff them out again but you will be missing material from the corrosion so it won't look right. I just painted mine with self etching primer and rustoleum silver rim paint.

Are there after market rims made like these or does Toyota still make them? I would assume not but have never inquired. I see on EBAY alot of OEM "Re-Furbished" rims for sale. Are those polished out?

long shot, but anyone know the matching paint for a 2007 Limited 18" wheel? It is starting to chip off in a few places and I want to try a repair before having to do them all. thanks!

Painted my wheels today. Couple coats of black rustoleum 2x paint and couple coats of the duplicolor silver metallic wheel paint. Nothing to fancy but they are one color again.

Painted my 2019 SR5 wheels gloss black. I like how they look now. After a few days to harden I'll shine the tires up and it should look even better.

Dont use acetone on plastic. It for cleaning metal I put those same caps in the dishwasher & they came out clean. Then 2 light coats of plastic primer.

For those wanting to paint caps, use a stripper first to remove the previous finish, then primer, then paint.

If you don't strip the old paint first it will very likely bubble under your paint in about a years' time.

Cleaned the fronts up with a light wet sanding with 400 grit and cleaned the backs up with a wire wheel on a drill. Pretty happy with how they came out. Color is Graphite metallic with a matte varnish (Montana spray paint).

Limited Rims Color?

Hey guys!

New on the Forum, and I'm driving my parents '02 SR5 with Limited trim package including the Wheels.

Very new to ALL this, so if anyone has ideas on color matching it would be greatly appreciated!

I’m about to refinish my stock 5 star wheels and get rid of the split spike ones I got for cheap. What does everybody think is the best colour with my truck. I kinda think black is getting a little outplayed. Open to opinions.

The graphite metallic a few posts back looks really good IMO. Or a Titanium silver. If you really want to work at it, or have someone else do it, have them polished out and clear coat.
