Realized I never posted my final results here. LX450 rims with 3 coats of plasti-dip and 3 coats of Rustoleum Hammered Finish Black.

Automotive catalyzed base / clear setup, I just picked a stock silver color. LandCrusier wheels, 265/75/r16 tires, stock height, for now......

I use a little $12 HF HVLP gun, the mini purple one, if you can bake a cake you can mix and spray catalyzed paint, and its much tougher than the stuff that comes in a can, not to mention its cheaper, and lays down smoother.

That looks pretty nice Jeff Power! Nice and smooth on the finish! Mine looked as smooth with the spray can job....but is not very durable...it's been chipping like crazy

On the bright side of things....my painted wheels are only my winter set up...and I have a set of Billet Aluminum Procomp wheels sitting in the garage ready to go back on in the spring!

Damn those look good! This is what I plan to do the next time around. I rattle canned mine 3 years ago and it is holding up but it's time for new tires which means I can strip them and paint them with real paint. I've colored matched my bumpers and M416 military trailer, there is no comparison in durability the rattle can isn't near as tough.

That looks pretty professional. Can you tell a little about the paint guy youre talking about? And where do you get your paint?

My wheels eventually scratched up and were beginning to fade.

I painted them using 2 cans of SEM Trim Paint #39033, Charcoal Metallic. It's more durable than average spray paint and goes on very even.

The color is certainly much darker than I expected, though I think it looks good. I'll try this color out and paint them again if I don't like it.

Wheel off, valve stem core removed, paint sanded.

Cleaned with mineral spirits, then masked with printer paper. No air in the tire allows you to get the paper really deep behind the BF Goodrich All-Terrain's Rim Protector.

Rustoleum Self Etching primer:

SEM Charcoal Metallic. Removed Toyota logos from emblems to be repainted black.

Those look sick but like you said, a little dark. I would have gone a little more hyper silver. Did you clear them?

Black Painted Wheels

I've had little experience with spray painting things but I decided to give it a go. I cleaned them, then primed them, spray painted, then finished them off with a clear coat. I didn't take the tires off the rims, but I used painter's tape to cover the side wall of the tires. They turned out pretty good so I'm happy. My only advice is to make sure you use short, sweeping motions when painting them. And to make the first coat light.

What? You only have to remove the tire from the car not the wheel. Use a deck of cards to protect the rubber from the paint.

I'm not rattle canning them this time, likely will spray them (all professional like). I've always stripped the wheel and tire in the past but I might just go for the cards method or use printer paper like the other gentleman.

Not to hi-jack this thread but what color should I paint my wheels. I'm running LX450 wheels with the dark silver wheel paint in the rattle can from duplicolor. I was entertaining, a stock silver color, white, a lighter silver than what I have now closer to the "hyper color" that my Sequoia's are from the factory.......
