Oil Change 5th Gen: How To- LOTS of PICS!

To fix that problem.
I use a pair of large channel locks to hold the canister in place while using the socket to take off the bottom part.

If you are having this problem in the first place it's because the drain was put on too tight...

Personally I don't find having to remove the skid plate to be that big of a deal, its offset by the fact that I do not need to jack the car up and put it on jack stands. If I was doing this every day and getting paid .25 hr flat rate the skid plate would bother me. Anyone that considers this an issue consider a remote filter set up?

Paper vs canister filters, not a big deal in my opinion. If installed properly both come off easily.

Not that I did have the dealer change the oil when it as in for warranty work on the t-case. They managed to snap one of the 10mm bolts off into the skid plate, I'm guessing he used an air ratchet on it. I was able to remove the remnants of the bolt from the backside with some vice grips.

Thanks for the write up. It helped a lot.

On my '14 I only had to drop the skid plate, not the plastic cover. 4 12mm bolts, it was down, no problem. The oil drain cover is also 12mm bolts, I was expecting them to be 10mm...?

Really the hardest thing about the whole deal was getting finding the 64mm cap wrench to buy in the first place (had to drive to the next town to get it at Auto Zone since NAPA, Advance, and O'reillys didn't have it); and then getting the stupid 64mm wrench off the oil canister after the job was over. Hint - whack it straight up with a rubber mallet, that seats it straight and allows it to drop down and off easier; otherwise the cap wrench invariably sits crooked on the canister and trying to pull it off straight down will get you nowhere.

I also followed the smart advice of anti-seizing the bolt threads, they were all looking rusty.

I did not replace the drain plug gasket (gasp!).

After you break the filter loose with the tool and you turn it CC a number of times, simply rock the tool from side to side while it's still attached to the extension/ratchet. That breaks it loose. Now you can finish the removal by hand.

Skid plate bolts stuck

Hello, this post is fantastic, thank you. After having the last shop I took my 4Runner to break the head off a bolt on the mini plate covering the plug, I decided I would change the oil myself.

Unfortunately, I didn't get too far, as I was immediately challenged with 2/4 bolts on the skid plate stuck completely. I've tried using a breaker-bar, soaking in WD-40, tapping with hammer, nothing works. How can I get these off?

Soak them with penetrating oil- spray several times for a few days- not plain old wd40(though that works sometimes). Use an impact to get them off. Tighten them a little first then try backing them out. Do that over and over.
If you round the heads find a 6 pt socket that's a tad too small, heat the bolt till it's glowing and hammer that socket on there. Let it cool and brute force it off- may twist the bolt in half. Then you are drilling and re tapping.

Anti seize FTW!

Anyone take a cut off wheel an cut an opening to get to the oil filter?

OMG! Please!

Use PB Blaster. Apply it and forget about it for a day. Stuff works wonders.

Awesome dealer story: just changed the oil on my 4Runner - dealer did it last time as part of my free 10k maintenance. Every skid plate bolt had a dab of grease on the threads :bigok: I'm an anti-sieze guy, but the tech was clearly thinking about keeping those bolts free, as they ALWAYS snap off on Toyotas & Lexii.
