Antman just because it is your great write up on the 5th gen oil change. Ok....here it is people. On page 41 is where I think this got started. I commented on a oil change should be a 10 minute or less situation. Blitzkrieg threw out a $50 dollar challenge, I accepted, he accused me of trolling, and I was just having some fun. Sorry for the delay as I had the video done a few days later, but I can barely add a photo here let alone get the video turned from sideways to upright and a section blurred out. Do you guys/gals ever notice any buildup/sludge in this area when you are changing your oil?

I have a 2016 Trail with about 8K miles. The dealer did the 1st "complimentary" oil change but I'm convinced I should be doing this on my own. Great write up and instructions will help me no doubt!

But definitely checking to see if you think this is normal/acceptable (picture below).

What????? I played by the challenge....it was "ANY VEHICLE".....HAHAHAHA....I spend $46 bucks just to win $50!! But at least I got a few beers out of it. Talk Blitzkrieg into triple or nothing and I will change it on my 3rd gen laying in the gravel in less than 10 minutes. LOL

Well, shame on me for not paraphrasing "Like your normal person who doesn't have a pit, actually warms up the oil first, changes the oil like he's not a 16 year old getting laid for the first time and does it correctly, taking time to inspect shit while laying on his back and basically showing his vehicle love".

I'm not going to triple the bet because I am sure you would do whatever it took to change oil in your 3rd gen in 10 minutes (no matter how half assed) however I am a man of my word and technically you did take the time, beer and effort to do it, so PM me your PayPal info and I will make good on the bet.

I would enjoy having a beer and day of fishing any time. Any time you make it to the dry side of Wa let me know as I would love to take you after some fish. I don't have anything scheduled for Co. but I'm hoping to be 5hrs north of Denver in Wyoming this fall hunting.

Agreed. Doesn't have to be that complicated, but making lemonade out of lemons here... Just take the time every 5-10k miles to do a thorough inspection of everything and give it a good cleaning so periodic inspections are easier. There are likely other maintenance items or projects that can be combined with this that would allow you to make a 1/2 day or full day of it... That's how I plan on approaching it anyway. To me, doing work/maintenance of this nature is enjoyable. Now, I just replaced the plugs and wires on our old mini-van....... that is not fun at all!!!

I find it unbelievable that all that engine oil drains out in less than 10 min ....... having done many oil changes on a hot summers day 30 min to drain all the oil out on gm truck.. this 2016 T4R took 45 min..

changing the oil is why it is to be completely drained , that is the bad oil that is at the pan bottom [muck].

this is one of the major reasons I do this myself I want all that nasty oil removed.

Wow, that's awesome. Almost as good as a Subaru....in regards to oil filter access anyway... The valves in the Forester I had (2015) rattled like crazy when first starting. I always wondered if it was due to the inverted filter. I would have assumed the filter had a check valve or something to keep the filter primed, but it didn't appear to have one when I changed it. (I only did one oil change after the first two years were done by dealer...) It could just be the noisy unrefined boxer engine in the Subarus...

2 Table spoons maybe for the drips! If you have "muck" sitting in the bottom of your oil pan that drains out you have way more to worry about than an oil change. I also understand why people wait for the very last drop and I think that is great. I admit waiting for every drip is best from a pure scientific/mathematical view. I dont believe it is needed at all on a vehicle with multiple quarts of oil. I have been changing oil like this for almost 40 years, and every commercial location I have ever seen does the same thing. The highest mileage vehicle I currently have where I bought it new has 290k on it. ( 02 Chev Suburban) It works for me, but I'm totally ok with doing it differently.

As oil changes always use some fractional quart amount of oil, I typically pour what would have been the remaining amount of oil into the engine once it has entered the "drip stage" of the drain. It seems to clear out that last remaining bit of old oil.

The fumoto ball valve is a great piece to have on as well....hook up the hose and open the valve.
