Oil change and oil filter O ring

Hi guys,

On Friday I had my complimentary 10,000 mile oil change done with 9,915 miles on the truck. Today with about 150 additional miles I noticed the oil light come on. I went into a nearby parking lot and checked the oil. Bone dry. I called Toyota care and had the 4R towed to the nearest dealer (not the one I went to for service). There was oil all over the skid plate and all the other parts. The service manager seemed honest and said the O ring on the filter was faulty and failed. I paid $48.00 for an oil change and new filter. I understand him charging me as it wasn't their fault and the other dealer was 80 miles away.

Do you think I have any recourse with the first dealer? Should I ask to be reimbursed the $48.00? How about asking for an engine compartment cleaning or detail?

Thanks in advance for the anticipated responses,

Jim

I would bet they put the O-ring in the wrong slot. (There are 2 slots.)

If it was faulty, they should have seen it BEFORE they installed it as every oil filter comes with a new O-ring.

That sucks! Good luck.

Yes, yes, and yes. The first dealer should have done it right to start with. Why not tow it straight back to them and have them fix it??

In your situation I'd definitely try to get reimbursed, not only for your money but your time as well... :thumb:

I asked that it be towed to the first dealer and was told they only tow 25 miles or the nearest dealer.

Thanks for your answer. I just wanted someone else's opinion before I seek recourse. I can't imagine they'll balk on reimbursement, it's the cleaning I'm curious about.

Jeff - I appreciate your reply about the two O rings, will definitely speak to dealer 1 about it. On a side note, I thoroughly enjoy reading your posts and hope your spide bite clears up soon.

Froggy - thanks for that link! Very interesting that it seems like the same issue I experienced. Wonder what the final outcome was.

OBW - Thanks for the reply. I had yesterday off as a paid holiday. I'd feel kind of funny asking to be reimbursed for my time. It's a hassle, but I'll stick to real costs.

The end result was the first dealer, Route 44 Toyota, detailed the engine bay (without an appointment or calling first) and gave me a check for the out of pocket expenses. I'm satisfied and will continue going there for service.
