Oil Change. What should I use?

Shell Rotella T6 syn 5-40 from Walmart. I live in az and this seems to be a good oil for how hard I use the truck in this climate.

Rotella t-6 ^^^great oil, great zinc levels, great price. I have run in it everything I own.

My father in laws T4R has 285k and just using dino oil runs perfect no oil burn. Change it frequently and you will see you don't need a synthetic in these rigs. Stay away from additives. If you really want to see some real word data on good oils head over to bob the oil guy.com and do a day of reading! Keep it simple use the Toyota filter and oil pan washer.

Yeah, I'd check out WalMart. They usually have the best prices on every brand.

I use Valvoline 5W30 and OEM Oil Filter from the dealer. I've used this brand over the years and nothing else.

Yup - just repeating above: Either walmart, or costco when the cases are on sale, Mobil 1 synthetic. It's the best deal to be found. I also load up on OEM filters at the dealership when they go on sale. I go to 5k+ on oil changes.

No Lucas please in the crankcase. Spend the extra money on good oil and a good filter.

Dumb question

I just picked up an 02 with 168,000 on it and I want to change the oil this weekend. I don't mind buying oil for it but I have a metric f**k ton of Valvoline Nexgyn 10w30 that I bought from work when we discontinued it. I live in North Carolina and the temperature typically never goes below zero degrees, however the weather has been a little crazy and we have seen some single digits over the last couple of weeks. I'm looking for opinions or personal experiences to help me decide if I should use some of the 10w30 or just buy some 5w30. Any and all help is appreciated.

10W30 is one of the recommended weights in the manual. I used it once during winter when my oil of choice was not available in 5W30. I noticed nothing different.

Yeay, luckily I have the manual and I noticed that both weights were listed I just wanted some other opinions. I have owned Nissans forever and they seem to be fine with whatever oil you put in them.

I've used 10w-30 Valvoline Max Life for several years and then switched to 5w-30 Mobil 1 Synthetic. Noticed no difference. I would say use what you already have for now and then decide on what you want to use when it's all used up. Just keep an eye out for leaks. I always do no matter what oil I use.

Unless it gets really cold, there is no practical difference between the same brand 10W or 5W oil.

I like Mobil 1 5w30.

You are always better of using synthetic regardless of the change intervals.
For one thing in general the Synthetic will help clean your engine, might be good to even do a couple 3000 mile oil changes with synthetic just for that reason alone.
I would go with a 5W30 mostly, if you happen to live in an environment that is like 9+ months out of the year HOT then 10W30 would be fine.

I would pick a date out of the year to make that oil change day unless you drive more than 5000 stop and go short trips a year or 7000-8000 highway miles per year.
Use the best quality oil filter you can find.

There honestly isn't any valid reason to use petroleum oil, the cost difference is negligible and the Synthetic is better oil under any circumstances.
