OK, Bottom Line: Sulphur Exhaust Smell TSB results

I figure on having the catalytic converter changed next year, before my V8 hits 80,000 miles (as per the Toyota Service Bulletin). So everyone that's had it done, please answer the following:

1. To what degree did it remove the obnoxious odor?
2. Did you notice any loss of power?
3. Did you notice any loss in fuel mileage?

1. 95% of the smell is gone. It happens A LOT less frequent.
2. Nope, still pulls like bat out of hell when you let it! Gotta love that V8
3. I never really tracked my milage that religiously but now that you mention it I thought my milage had dropped a little....is that typical??

I think it is 90% gone or so. I will smell it every once in a while, but it is no where near as stanky as it was before.

No loss in power

No loss in mileage (check my signature).

Because this is sort of major surgery, and all surgery has risks. There's always a chance that the dealer could put something back together incorrectly. You have to weigh that risk against the degree to which the problem is annoying you.

Actually, I am waiting for a couple other reasons:

1. They may fine tune the procedure more, or come up with a totally better (continuous improvement) solution.
2. I will have new hardware at 80k miles.

I had it done on my 2003 V6 a couple years ago.
No loss in power. No decrease in MPG. No noticible change in the smell. It still stinks when I floor it. I'm also in PHX. I had Bell Rd Toyota do it.

I just had mine in for the sun-roof and had them do the seat latch TSB done. The Stealer also ordered the cats and told me it will not fix the problem. By the way, the seat latch TSB made the squeak worse.

One thing that pisses me off is that one of the things that I really liked was being able to put the back window down.............usless feature with the stink it produces. I wondered if they had the exhaust exiting curved behind the rear wheel like most vehicle's if it would solve the smelling of the stink ? You only really smell it because of how the wind sucks into the cab area.

Koz, what was wrong with the sun roof ? Knock wood I've never had a problem with mine on the 4R or any other vehicle I've had . Its a nice option to have , but I really dont use it that often. I keep the shade open for light but very seldom open it .

Thats why we have warranties...not much risk if they screw something up, they fix it again, and again, and again, until its correct.

I have the Magnaflow side exit cat-back system and it has helped a little. It actually made the smell not as strong, but I don't think it was due to the redirect. The sunroof made a BAD noise and popped off a piece of the trim, when I was closing it. They popped the trim back, lubed it and sent me on my way. It seems to be OK so far. I will be using it every time I get in it, to make sure it's OK.

1. 99% Gone. Ever with the rear window down i don't smell it when I punch it.

2. No change in HP or performance noticed at all.

3. Gas Milage seems to be the same.

Having this done was the right thing for me. I had it done as soon as I noticed the problem (my T4R had less than 5,000 miles on it).

If your vehicle is still covered have it done!

Tery, we both live in the valley and I had the TSB performed almost two years ago:

1. Even with our AZ blend of gas I very rarely get a hint of a smell of sulfur, and even then it's nothing near what it was before.

2. No change in performance.

3. While I didn't see any immediate change after the TSB my mileage has improved over time to where I get around 18.5 mpg combined for my daily commute (hand calc'ed).


Interesting if you can get it done before 80k miles though.

Yes, this particular TSB addresses a major emissions component, so this work is done under the 8/80 emissions warranty.

You can always "get it done" - it's just that you have to pay for it if the relevant warranty is expired! So the issue is to "get it done for free".

"IF" meaning a dealer still has the right to make you prove it does it. Its a TSB not a recall...its up to the dealers descression. I complained once and they said it couldnt be reproduced. So the next I went in to make the appointment/complain about the smell still, they just ordered the parts and took care of it for me.

If you can get it done after 36k miles and the dealer can reproduce the problem. I wasn't aware that the TSB was good for warranty coverage until 80k miles. However, that's great if it is.

Mine already said they'd do it - no questions. I just told them I only use Top Tier gas.
