OKAY, Parts came in and installed, but...

Not sure why but my pictures do not show, so here they are again...

Here you can see that there is no more fan! It is all over the driveway... See below...

Plastic Everywhere!

Lucky for you the fan went straight south and away from you! That could have been bad... Guess it's a good time for an electric fan upgrade?

Oh I was lucky alright, but I did get hit and cut in several places...

I got two cuts on top of my head, three on my neck, one on my face and two or three on my arms, and a few sore spots where large chucks hit me...

But I am fine, though a bit sore and some scabs, nothing really to major...

I am very lucky that I was looking down when it went... The radiator and other items were not so lucky...

I was wondering about the electric fan as well, what do you suggest? What size is "Right". I have seen them up to 16" as well as some that come as two 10 to 12" fans... What do you use to trigger them on? Sensor on the water inlet jacket???

Thanks for the info...

I was not going to post these, but what the heck.. Here is the damage to ME when the fan went BOOM!

skullduggery-albums-damage++her+%28during+testing..%29-picture9064-cheek-little-nick-all-over-neck-two-top-my-head-well.jpg

The face and neck. One on the cheek and no less then five spots on the neck. One that is larger, the others are more or less just a small nick...

The larger one on my neck and the one on my sholder. There are two others on my arm but they were more minor.

This one on my arm hurts the most of all of them. It must have been a larger chunk that hit me here...

Well that is the damage to me, glad I had my head down when it went BOOM... You just never know what is going to happen... As an after thought, I should have had safety glasses on, but I did not... Will from know on though...

I wonder what the heck caused that? That is such a random freak thing unless something got dropped on the fan and it shattered upon impact?

Well, you've got the blood and sweat into this thing... lets see some tears :)

As for cooling fans, I just picked up a 16" cooling fan with a perma-cool thermostat. You can set this particular one to turn on between 180-210*F. It has a probe that you stick into the radiator fins and the rest is pretty simple, power and ground. I will however run a switch so I can control it in the cabin of the 4runner though. I got mine used on craigslist for $50 with two 16" Hayden fans (I'll only use one) and the permacool thermostat and harness.

Nothing droped on it, or got in there at all...

All I can figure is that the plastic was VERY brittle and when I hit full revs it came apart.

It did hit full revs twice, but then it came back to the same and engine light came on, so I will move on...

I am looking at a electric fan for a few reasons... not the least of which is I don't have one now... LOL

I was thinking about it before the problem, just a bit quicker then I would have liked to do it I guess...

I will look into it and see what I can find...

Thanks again,
Randy

There's a site called "The Fan Man" that has a lot of good info regarding electric fans, sizes to use, accessories, etc.. And from now on, keep the "body" damage to your truck--LOL!

Got the knock sensor today, will put it in this weekend most likely... Not real sure about my wire... Grabbed that one on the truck at the junk yard, but that one is kind of grungy and crunchy too...

We will have to see how it looks when I pull it apart I guess.

I did see some new wires on eBay, that is an option as well I guess...

If you can pull the pin out of the plastic plug, then you can just run a whole new wire to the ECU and solder the wire to the pins. If you have questionable wiring it's too easy to make your own with new wires.

Just cut thru the extra one that I got from the junk yard today as it was rather crunchy...

It seems there are two wires most of the way down the wire, then the lower plug seems to only use the center wire... Am I correct? Why is there two a center and a shield wires on the top plug and 3/4 of the harness, but only the center is used on the sensor???

Thanks for the info...

Randy

SV_Dude,

I have found several options for fans. Do you know how many CFM's your fan moves?

I need to move enough to keep it cool, I am in the desert, so it gets rather hot in the summer time here. Not sure how much it should move??

Anyone know how much the stock fan moves? What the target CFM should be?

Thanks
Randy

Just about anything above 2000CFM should be more than adequate. Just make sure that your radiator is clean or else the fan won't do any good. Get your hose and spray water through the front of the radiator, you should see clean water flowing freely out the back.

With school and everything else, have not had the time to tear into things until today...

Here is what I found...

Is one of these gears on backwards? It looks like it is to me...

skullduggery-albums-more+broken+parts...-picture9514-one-these-cam-gears-backwards.jpg

My sensor wire does not have an upper connection. Is this common? I will run to pic a part and see if I can grab one to patch in.

So more parts to order now... as it always seems to be... But it is worth it in the long run...

So what do you think, while I have it all apart, should I just go ahead and do the timing belt and water pump too?

I am kind of thinking it would be a good idea, though a pain, but it is all apart and much simpler now...

Thoughts???

If you have no idea when it was done last, and it's already torn open, you definitely might as well replace the T-belt (and water pump). Tearing it down is what makes the replacement expensive. As for your cam gears, if they both have timing marks showing, then they're on correctly--not even sure if they CAN be reversed, quite frankly (but it's good that you're checking). I believe they look that way to help keep the belt centered, with one lip in and the other facing out--keeps it from walking too much. Best of luck!

I am still thinking about the Tbelt, It looks good, not cracks or chips. I will ponder it this weekend.

I got the connector and have put it on the wires, hope it works. I found that when I was taking it apart that the red wire was not in the connector, it was loose. So we will see how things go now.

I ordered the fan, it should be here Monday or Tuesday (I hope) I need to grab an upper gasket set as well.

That should be it unless I choose to do the Tbelt and water pump...

Let me know if there is anything else I should look into while I am in this far...

For the record, it's nearly impossible to look at a T-belt and tell how worn it is--they just don't show much, until they go "pop". That's why it's so important to always note the mileage when they're done, because visual inspection rarely turns up anything.
