Ome 884 vs 885 coil questions

I have a 2006 V-8 4runner.

From what I have read people seem to recomend that for a V-8 4runner you would want the 885 front coils vs the 884's. Am I correct? Sleeoffroad says to use the 885's for v-8's as well.

I just got off the phone with someone from www.rocky-road.com and was told that the 884's are for a stock load v-8 4runner. The 885 are for a runner with a aftermarket bumper, and the 886 are for a 4runner with a bumper and winch. He then pointed out arb usa's page to cross refference too ( see here- http://www.arbusa.com/10_UVAG/4runner_071206.pdf ). Everything looks like what he was saying is true on that page but what also concerns me is that the 884's are only listed as a 1"s of lift while the 885"s are listed as 2 inches of lift for the front.

Which ones do I want?

Before I started talking to the guy with rocky-road I was gonna order this as per listed on slee's website....
2 x OME885 Front Coil Springs
2 x N140S Front Struts
2 X N141 Shocks
2 X OME895 Springs

now I'm confused....

The reason for me ordering through rocky-road is I can get the kit shipped to me for $667.75 which is the best price I have found.

Man, I researched the OME for a full month and read everything I could find until my head was about to burst! The only threads I could find on any of the boards with people using the 884 were from back when people first started trying out the OME setup. In the end I went with the setup below last week, but haven't installed it yet on my 06 4x4 V8.

Ben at Slee really impressed me with his knowledge and willingness to spend 30-45mins on the phone discussing options. I also had them pre-build the front coil-overs so it should just be a "plug & play" install.

Front- OME885/ N140S
Rear- OME895/ N141

That's what I was thinking. I have have heard good things about sleeoffroad's phone support and that's what it said on their website but then when I talked with someone from rocky-road and they recomended the 884's for the v-8. I was kinda suprized to find descrepencies between recomended springs from different vendors for the same vehicle. It seems that most are using 885's for the v-8 from what I can tell also.

Thanks for the reply.

I ended up ordering the Front- OME885/ N140S
Rear- OME895/ N141 combo.

I ran the 885s on the front with my V8 and the stock bumper. I thought it was perfect set up and not too stiff. It gave me the lift I wanted too. I have since upgraded to the 886s after installing winch bumper....also a good match. I'd go with Slee's recomendation. :biggrin2:

Great to hear another recomendation of the 885's for the v-8! That's what I ordered. :bigok:

883 are for stock V6 and 884 are for stock V8. Basically follow this:

V6/V8
883/884 standard
884/885 +200lbs (bumper or skids,...)
885/886 +400lbs (bumper and skids and winch)

1" and 2" lift on the website based on Prado which is heavier.

Okay so arb-usa and rocky-road recomend using the 884's up front on a stock v-8 4runner while Sleeoffroad is recomending the 885 for a stock v-8 4runner.....

Now I'm confused.........

It also seems that good-times writeup also says to use the 885's for a stock v-8.

My understanding is that rocky-road gets their recommendation from ARB who is the US distributor of Old Man Emu. Sleeoffroad adjusted their recommendations fromt he standard ARB spec after getting feedback from customers they performed the OME install on. To make it more confusing Wheeler's Offroad is also recommending the 885 but makes no mention of V6/V8.

get 885's. I have 884's on my v8 4runner. The front has sagged badly about 1-1.25 inches. It bottoms out on the freeway, and rides like crap now. i only have 21000 miles on teh kit, and all highway. I gave up on OME, and i have bought DR coilovers.

Well I emailed rocky-road since they were closed on the
weekend with a few more questions to hopefully get everything figured out before my order processed on monday. I was pleasantly suprised to recieve an answer to my email from the same guy I spoke with on the phone just 2 hours later on a saturday. He expressed his understanding and said he would have someone look into it. I also gave him a link to this thread so he can see where I am coming from.

The last thing I want is for my front end to start sagging with the 884's as mentioned above. Right now I'm leaning on 885's....

This is what I don't want to happen. Thanks for sharing your experiance.

Why would the springs give out & sag like that ? man to the point of bottoming out on the road.

I am not sure. ARB has not been much help, neither has the vendor where i bought them from. I gave up on OME all together. I will give you an example, if i am doing 60 on the freeway, and hit an underpass, and there is a slight dip before the tar and concrete before it, you can hear the front hit the bump stops. The sagging is really bothering me now, since the front and rear were almost level, and now it has the stock rake again.

Well here is my reply from rocky road...

"The 03-06 4 runner part #s have changed so its a bit confusing. Yes
indeed you had the 885 the new heavy spring # so I changed it for the
stock light load application spring#884. you should be good.
Thanks Rocky-Road"

Now I'm confused even more. He was saying that the OME part numbers have recently changed? HUH?

It seems he changed my order and is sending me the 884's now. :awais:

Hey Mr. Lambdebois and ProMed, when you guys finally get your lifts installed, can you take some pics and post them......Thanks!

Does he even know that you have a V8??? I would find it rather odd that OME would change their part numbers... stranger things have happened, but it would be very suprising.

It may no longer be feasible, but my only recommendation is to call and speak with Ben at Slee who is in your home state of Colorado.

:iagree: Talk with Ben at Slee Offroad to get the facts straight. I have not heard of any spring part number changes.

FYI....I have a pair of OME 885 front springs sitting in my garage. I used them for about 10K miles before I installed my winch bumper and upgraded to the stiffer 886 springs. With th V8 the 885s are perfect.

You are welcome to mine if you want them. Just have to cover the shipping costs.

Depends on your install plans. If you plan to install your self, it's easier to have them pre-build the front struts by installing the springs on the shocks for yuou before they ship them to you. That way you don't have to compress the springs and can just swap out the assembled unit. If a shop is doing the install for you then no biggy.

Let me know if you want my springs.

Yes. I have mentioned it several times. I also gave him links to slee's website along with wheeler's so he could see that they are recomending the 885's for the v-8's now. I also gave him a link to this thread so he can see where I am coming from. I do not know if he even bothered to look as he made no mention of it.

I'm kinda upset he changed my order to the 884's after I said I was leaning on sticking with the 885's without speaking with me more about it. I guess it's time to go get on the phone and get this figured out.

Thanks for the advice once again. I guess I'll call them and try and make sure they send me the 885's for the front. I appreaciate your offer for the springs and may take you up on it. Let me see how this all pans out first.

I'm not worried about assembling the struts/springs but appreaciate the advice. For the average person it may defenately be worth it.
