OME Trim Packers, worthless.

I recently installed a ICON stage 2 and of course started to experience some driver side lean. A whole inch of it to be exact. Right side measures at 24.5”, left 23.5. Ordered some OME Trim Packers to compensate for the lean, seems all it did was compress the spring even more, now it’s just tucked up in the wheel well with a slight camber (So now I get to spend another hour removing suspension to remove the packers) I’m considering 700lb springs, so I’m curious if those of you with 700lb springs still experience lean? I don’t have any aftermarket bumpers or a spare weighing it down, also only on a 1/4 tank of gas. I will eventually but not any time soon upgrade bumpers so the springs will eventually be necessary.

It’s not the trim packer. These rigs aren’t level no matter what sometimes. Mine had the lean and we adjusted it a full inch higher in the front on the drivers side yet I still had a lean. I am running two rear trim packers now on the drivers side yet still have a little lean. I gave up haha

I guess what I meant to say is, I started off with 23.5” drivers side, 24.5” passenger.
Installed 2 trim packers on the drivers side, which seemed to make a half inch difference instantly but once it settled over night, it’s back to 23.5” and the tire now has a camber to it. The coil does look slightly more compressed than the other side.

Why not just adjust the preload instead of adding trims?
I feel like you're going to have a super rough ride with the 700s, assuming you have no extra weight in the front. I have them on mine with about 250lbs up front and it's just about perfect.

Preload up front is maxed out at the recommended 2.13” on both sides. Both sides measure the same up front, and the passenger rear. The drivers rear is my only issue. If 700s would get me level, I’d be ok having a rough ride as I’m sure this can’t be good for tire wear. Besides, it’d give me a reason to upgrade bumpers sooner rather than later.

Interested to see what your CV boots look like with 4 inches of lift (23.5 center hub to lower fender).
 
I have them on mine. They helped a little - got me within 3/4".

I adjusted preload as well to help... got it with in 1/4" then said F it. Like someone said its almost impossible to be perfect.:caked: My preload is close to 3/4" difference side to side.

I’m gonna have to play with that a little bit. I’d be content if it was within 1/4” but a whole inch is just ridiculous.

I really don’t want to get off topic but like I said I do have the preload maxed out, which has me at 24.5” all around except the drivers rear obviously. I’m aware that’s a little excessive but I haven’t read anywhere what the actual “safe limit” is. So if I lower the preload in the front, then I’m gonna have rake, which I don’t want. But I guess it’s just gonna be a day of adjusting till I get it close. I’m still curious to know if people still have lean with 700lb springs.

I’m successfully running 285/75/17 with BMC and some minor trimming.

I cant say for certain as I dont have them. My guess is yes you still will based on theory (guessing the springs are cut the same length and are not side dependent - whereas items like cornfed spacers are side dependent to help account for lean). You could look at dobs springs too (people like them here).

I think small rake is OK... full tank of gas, and if you add a dog or gear in the rear end - it falls pretty quick back there (then your shooting headlights in the sky and IMO reverse rake (towards the back) looks way worse then rake towards the front) but each his own.

To the tire comment. HUB to fender excludes the tire there brochacho. I can only give people top of rim to fender due to the "dish" of my wheels I cant locate center really well (just add 1/2 wheel dimension).

Icon coil overs maxed at 2.13 like the OP has very well might result in angry CV boots. Just because Icon states the max on their COs, it doesn't mean that it is healthy height for our IFS rigs.

My guess is you're having a problem because you're trying to set too much lift resulting in the frame twisting under the forces and the body will never get to where you want unless you change the control arms in the rear. It's possible you have a rear spring out of position or something. But 24.5" is higher than what you can normally run. That would be close to 5 inches up front. I'm guessing you're at the full extension of the front shocks already.

FWIW - the 285/75/17's will fit at any ride height with the same trimming unless you never intend to hit bumps. I have 285/75/17's and currently set around 21" front. So if you're trying to max the lift for tire size - you can adjust down a bit. If you shoot for something more like 22.5" it'll probably work and also ride a lot nicer. Or it might be time to consider a bracket lift or long travel front setup for more height.

I got 22" in the front hub to fender after my Icon Stage 2. Your CVs are pissed at you and might cause even more problems. Back it down a bit and start from there.

Solid advice fellas, I appreciate that! I’ll back it down and see what happens. Although I do like the stance it’s at now. Although, I came across this set up a few weeks ago, 4" - 4.5" Lift on 5th Gen 4Runner - Ekstrom Strut Shims & Icon Springs
Putting strut shims on top of the coil overs will effect the CV angles as well right?
 
If you want to go higher I'd suggest a cross member lift. It will save your CVs.

Coilovers not going get it done correctly.
 
Update: after doing some serious adjusting to the pre-load and removing the trim packers from the drivers side coil, I’ve managed to get everything within a 1/2”. My drivers side is nearly maxed out and passenger preload is sitting about 3/4 lower. 23.5 and boots still look ok, I still plan to stretch them and add a diff drop.
I will say the OME trim packers literally did nothing which still blows my mind. Even after removing them and driving around so the suspension would settle, I still had the same measurement.

All rigs are different. To put it in perspective I have Icon Stage 2 and I am at 22.75 in the front. I have 17 threads showing on the coil over above the collar on the driver and 9 on the driver with a diff drop. CV boots are happy. I did have it have 23.5 at one point and the ride was shit and the boot were not happy.
